The man with the green carnation (original title: The Trials of Oscar Wilde or The Man with the Green Carnation ) is a British film by Ken Hughes from 1960. It deals with the trials and the conviction of the writer Oscar Wilde . The Man in the Green Carnation appeared just a short time after Oscar Wilde , a film that was released that month and covers the same subject. It was published in Germany on March 22, 1962.

action

The film opens with the premiere of Lady Windermere's Fan , Oscar Wilde's breakthrough as a playwright. The focus is on the three trials in 1895, at the end of which Wilde was sentenced to two years in prison. The film ends with Oscar Wilde's release from prison and his departure from his wife and closest friends before going into exile in France.

background

The script by Ken Hughes is based on the 1948 book The Trials of Oscar Wilde by H. Montgomery Hyde and the play The Stringed Lute by John Furnell . Oscar Wilde's son Vyvyan Holland and Lord Cecil Douglas, a nephew of Lord Alfred Douglas ′, advised the film.

Reviews

The man with the green carnation received mostly positive reviews. Especially in comparison with the black and white film Oscar Wilde, which was released almost at the same time, it did well in both the assessment of the script and the performance of the actors. A tendency to heroize savages and to gloss over one's life was criticized.
