Nigel Patrick

Nigel Patrick (born: Nigel Dennis Wemyss-Gordon ; born May 2, 1913 in London ; † September 21, 1981 there ) was a British film and theater actor and film director .

Life

Nigel Patrick was born in London to the actor couple Charles Wemyss and Dorothy Turner . He was on the theater stage from 1932, his debut was the play The Life Machine , which he completed at the Regent Theater in London. One of his most successful pieces, however, was George and Margaret , which was performed around 800 times at Wyndham's Theater in London's West End . In 1940 Patrick first appeared in front of the camera in the detective film Mrs. Pym of Scotland Yard . Shortly afterwards, however, he was sent to the Second World War as a soldier , where he served as an infantryman in the renowned King's Royal Rifle Corps for around five years . He fought in the Middle East , Africa and most recently in Italy .

In 1946 he made his comeback as an actor with the film adaptation of the play Morning Departure by Kenneth Wooland . In 1949, he met actress Beatrice Campbell on the set of Silent Dust , a film drama . The young widow - her first husband Robert MacClancy had been killed in combat as a bomber pilot - and he fell in love and married in 1951. They had two children. In 1953 Campbell and Patrick stood together again in front of the camera in the thriller Grand National Night .

Nigel Patrick had been a well-known British actor since the 1960s, one of whose most famous films was the war film Battle of Britain , produced in 1969 . In The Great Waltz , staged in 1972, he embodied the Austrian composer Johann Strauss . From 1962 to 1965 he ventured into the world of a television series, and so stood in 39 episodes of Code 01 (Zero One) as the main actor in the role of inspector Allan Garnett from the International Aviation Safety Authority in London in front of the camera. This role made him well known in Germany. It was one of the first television series that ZDF first broadcast shortly after it began broadcasting in 1963 and repeated a few years later.

In his life, Patrick was behind the camera twice as a director. His film debut was the 1957 comedy How to Murder a Rich Uncle , one of the first films in which Michael Caine was seen. Just four years later, in 1961, he took over the direction of the drama Johnny Nobody .

He was nominated for the British Film Academy Award in 1953 for his role in The Sound Barrier , a feature film by David Lean . In 1958 he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Land of the Rain Tree .

In May 1979, Patrick's wife Beatrice Campbell died at the age of 56. A short time later, Patrick was diagnosed with lung cancer; an illness from which the actor died around two and a half years later.
