Golden Globe Award / Best Supporting Actor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winner and nominee for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Supporting Actor (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture) , which honors the most outstanding acting achievements of the past calendar year. The category was launched in 1944.

The winner was awarded the Oscar 41 times later , most recently in 2020 when the award was presented to Brad Pitt ( Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ) . In 1953, 1957, 1960, 1966–1968, 1976 and 2017, the award-winning film role was not considered for the Oscar. The rare honor of being nominated for two different film roles in one year was given to the British Hugh Griffith ( A Man Like Job , Oliver ) in 1969 and the American Dennis Hopper ( Blue Velvet , free throw ) in 1987 . In 2008, the Australian Heath Ledger ( The Dark Knight ) was honored posthumously.

American actors have won the Acting Award 50 times, followed by their colleagues from Great Britain (16 wins) and Austria (four wins). Actors from German-speaking countries were able to join the list of winners in 1966, 1986 and 2010 and 2013, when Oskar Werner ( The Spy Who Came From the Cold ) , Klaus Maria Brandauer ( Out of Africa ) and Christoph Waltz ( Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained ) prevailed against the competition in English-language productions. Hardy Krüger ( Der Flug des Phoenix ) competed in vain in 1966 , Maximilian Schell ( Julia ) in 1978 and Daniel Brühl ( Rush - Alles für die Sieg ) and German-Irish Michael Fassbender ( 12 Years a Slave ) in 2014 . The only actor to date to have been nominated and won for a non-English-speaking role was Puerto Rican Benicio del Toro in 2001 for his Spanish-speaking part in the Hollywood production Traffic - Power of the Cartel .
