Haing S. Ngor (born March 22, 1940 in Samrong Young, Cambodia ; † February 25, 1996 in Los Angeles , USA ) was a Cambodian gynecologist and actor . For his portrayal of Dith Pran in the film The Killing Fields - Crying country , a journalist , which the terror regime of the Khmer Rouge survived and four years in labor camps spent, he received the 1985 Oscar as Best Supporting Actor .

Ngor, himself a survivor of the Killing Fields , could only escape the mass murder of intellectuals ordered by Pol Pot by hiding his profession. So he watched helplessly as his wife, who was housed in the same labor camp as he, died giving birth to her child - if he had intervened, not only he but she would have been executed as well. After the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, Ngor worked as a doctor in a refugee camp in Thailand . On August 30, 1980 he emigrated to the USA.

In 1988 Ngor published the book Haing Ngor: A Cambodian Odyssey , in which he describes his life in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge. In the second issue, which was published under the title Survival in the Killing Fields , co-author Roger Warner describes the life of Ngor after the Oscar award in an epilogue. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was seen as an actor in television series and feature films.

On February 25, 1996, Ngor was shot dead by members of a street gang outside his Los Angeles apartment. Since a medallion with the photo of his deceased wife was stolen from him in addition to his Rolex watch, but not several hundred dollars that he is said to have been carrying with him, it was speculated that the perpetrators might have acted on behalf of Khmer Rouge sympathizers. It later emerged that he was accidentally the victim of an Asian youth gang whose members needed money for drugs.
