POW - Prisoner of War (Alternative title: Prisoner of War ; Original title: In Love and War ) is an American drama from 1987 . Directed by Paul Aaron , the screenplay was written by Carol Schreder based on a book by Jim Stockdale and Sybil Stockdale.

United States Navy pilot James B. Stockdale was shot down and captured at the beginning of the Vietnam War . He was tortured during the eight years of imprisonment and organized resistance against the Vietnamese among his comrades. Stockdale has sensitive background information about the Tonkin incident , but he does not reveal it. Meanwhile, his wife Sybil goes public and tries to get her husband released.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "staged in a straightforward manner and developed lengthy" . It reflects "less the atmosphere of the war years than the self-esteem of the American nation at the time of production" .
