action

Students Oliver Barrett and Jenny Cavilleri meet in college when Oliver tries to borrow a book from the library where Jenny works. He is a popular hockey player at college and a student from a wealthy, conservative family, but she is the daughter of simple Italian immigrants and extremely talented musically. The unlikely couple begins a relationship and, despite initial difficulties, decides to get married. Oliver turns away from his family because his father does not agree to an immediate marriage.

The couple wed a “self-made wedding” and moved into a modest apartment, as Oliver refused any support from his father and had to get by with temporary jobs. Meanwhile, Jenny works underpaid as a music teacher. Oliver finished his law studies and began a career as a lawyer, which significantly improved the young couple's financial situation.

Jenny goes to the doctor because her desire to have children is not fulfilled. It turns out that she has a blood disorder that is incurable. Oliver asks his father for money to finance Jenny the best possible therapy, but with pride he hides the reason for his request. The father lends him the money, believing it is for another purpose. The illness cannot be delayed for long and Jenny dies in Oliver's arms.

When he leaves the hospital, he meets his father. In the meantime, he has found out what his son actually needed the money for. He tells Oliver that he is sorry, to which Oliver replies that love means never having to ask for forgiveness. With this hint of reconciliation, the film ends where it began: Oliver sits on a park bench and thinks of his late wife.

One of the role models for Oliver Barrett is Al Gore . Political opponents assumed that Gore had claimed that his wife Tipper was also a role model for Jenny Cavilleri, which Segal, who knew both of them when he was a student, clearly denied. Tommy Lee Jones , who made his film debut here in a smaller role, also knew Segal and Gore from their student days.

The scene in which Oliver drives through the driveway of his parents' house was filmed at the Old Westbury Gardens estate .

Movie reviews

"Highly popular, but honest implementation of a serious topic."

- Heyne Film Lexicon, 1996

“A bestseller film adaptation that combines sentimentality and less squeamish dialogues, but does not go beyond superficialities. One of the big box office hits of Hollywood cinema of the early 1970s. "

“The tearful scrap after Erich Segal's bestseller mixes proven clichés. It was one of the greatest cinema hits of the 70s [...] and unleashed tears from millions of viewers. "
