Francis Lai

Francis Lai ([ fʁɑ̃sis lɛ: ]; born April 26, 1932 in Nice ; † November 7, 2018 in Paris ) was a French composer and accordionist . In 1971 he received the Oscar for best film music for his work on Love Story .

Life

Lai became known in the 1950s as a congenial accompanist for Édith Piaf . For them, as well as for Juliette Gréco , Petula Clark , Ella Fitzgerald , Johnny Hallyday , Tom Jones , Nana Mouskouri , Mireille Mathieu and Frank Sinatra , he wrote around 600 chansons. As a composer he was self-taught.

He achieved world fame with his film scores for A Man and a Woman (1966), Love Story (1970) and Bilitis (1977). For Love Story , which sold millions of copies, he received the Oscar for best film music in early 1971. The theme song (Where Do I Begin) Love Story became a hit in several versions. Andy Williams had the biggest, reaching the top 10 in Great Britain and the USA. In addition, Lai's own version as well as Roy Clark , Shirley Bassey and Henry Mancini reached the charts with their recordings.

After A Man and a Woman , he worked with director Claude Lelouch several times, including for Die Entführer let greet ( L'aventure c'est l'aventure , 1971), A touch of tenderness ( Si c'était à refaire , 1976) , Alone for two ( À nous deux , 1979) or for everyone will receive their reward… ( Les uns et les autres , 1981). Lai also composed the music for the second season of the television series The Dream Ship , according to his own account, still under the impression of a previously undertaken cruise.
