Meeting in Venice (original title: Hasards ou coïncidences ) is a French - Canadian drama directed by Claude Lelouch . The film premiered on September 3, 1998 at the Venice Film Festival . His overarching credo is "The greater the misfortune, the more grandiose life".

action

The single mother Miriam met the gallant art dealer Pierre on a trip. This leads to a romantic love affair that comes to an abrupt end when Miriam's son Serge and Pierre have a fatal accident in a sailing boat. In order to cope with grief, she continues the journey around the world that she started together on her own. She records the individual stations with a video camera.

background

The love drama was produced in 1997 by Lelouch's production company "Les films 13" with a budget of the equivalent of 11.1 million euros.

The locations were scattered around the world, specifically New York , South Korea , France , Venice , Mexico and Canada . A ballet scene was filmed in St. Mark's Square in Venice.

The painter Chaim Soutine is mentioned several times in the film. The pictures "The Gondola with the Red Woman" and "The Spiral", forged by Pierre, are not the artist's works.

criticism

“Melodrama about the power of love, transience and death, which feels obliged to a modern aesthetic that doesn't really fit the content. The game plot is repeatedly interrupted by artfully assembled video recordings and flashbacks. "

Awards

Alessandra Martines won the Silver Hugo for Best Actress in 1998. The film music was nominated for a César in 1999.
