Roman de gare (Eng .: "Bahnhofsroman") is a French crime film by Claude Lelouch from 2007 with Dominique Pinon and Fanny Ardant in the leading roles.

action

Crime writer Judith Ralitzer, who recently published a bestseller, is interrogated by officers at the Paris police headquarters . She is suspected of being connected to a serial killer who allegedly helps her as a ghostwriter with writing. He is known by the nickname "the magician" because he has a habit of performing magic tricks on his victims.

A man drives on the autobahn and hears on the radio that "the magician" has escaped from a maximum security prison. He stops at a rest stop and watches as a young woman is abandoned by her fiancé, who drives away after an argument with her car and her money. The man offers to take her with him. On the way she introduces herself to him. Her name is Huguette and she works as a hairdresser in Paris. She only recently met her idol Judith Ralitzer. The man tells her that he wrote all of Ralitzer's books. However, he later confesses to Huguette that he was joking with it. He introduces himself to her as a professor who three days ago left his old life with his wife and children behind and is now traveling south.

Huguette is on the way to her family's farm near the French Alps . She persuades her new companion to play her future husband in front of her relatives. On arrival at the estate, Huguette's “fiancé” gets along straight away with her family and especially with her daughter, to whom he performs little magic tricks. But the next day he has to say goodbye and continues to the south of France . Then Huguette's actual fiancé appears, whom Huguette furiously chases away. Your family now knows that they lied.

Meanwhile, "the magician" is arrested by the police while he is doing card tricks to teenagers in a café. The man Huguette met finally arrives in the port of Cannes , where Judith is already waiting for him on her yacht. His name is Pierre Laclos and he has been the author's secretary for seven years. Not only does he provide new ideas for her novels, but he also writes them for her. His latest draft tells Huguette's story and is also about a professor, a serial killer and a writer. Judith is immediately enthusiastic. However, Pierre no longer wants to be a ghostwriter. He wants to publish the novel under his name. Judith is anything but okay with this and threatens to kill him. On the high seas towards Elba , Pierre continues to work on his novel, while Judith tries to persuade him to continue writing for her. After a night of love together, Pierre disappeared the next morning. Apparently he had fallen from the ship drunk and drowned in the sea.

Huguette also learns about the accident on television. When she reads Judith's latest book and recognizes herself in it, she is certain that the author murdered Pierre in order to publish the novel under her name. Huguette sits in the audience at a television program in which Judith's book is highly praised by the presenter. She stands up and accuses Judith in front of the camera of stealing Pierre's novel. As a result, Judith is interrogated by a commissioner in Paris. He had recently started a relationship with Pierre's sister who had been abandoned by her husband, a professor. The inspector accuses Judith of killing both Pierre and her ex-husband. Judith protests her innocence. Pierre's death was a tragic accident. As for her husband, he once took his own life. But the inspector doesn't believe her. When her lawyer arrives, Pierre, who was believed to be dead, also turns up at the police headquarters. He had staged his death because he was sure that Judith would actually murder him as soon as he had finished writing the novel. He was also convinced that the novel would never have sold as well with its unknown name as it did with Judiths. Although she is no longer a murder suspect, she still sees her reputation in danger. In the stairwell of the police headquarters she throws herself down and dies. On television she is then described as a tragic figure à la Ernest Hemingway . Pierre then meets with Huguette at the rest stop where they once met. They kiss and drive away together.

Reviews

According to VA Vusetto from the New York Post , Claude Lelouch's film is “the cinematic counterpart” to the book that gives it its title, “which you buy to read on a train journey and throw away as soon as you arrive at your destination”. Roman de Gare is “entertaining food” that is quickly forgotten after the credits, but that is still “worth seeing”. Variety's Scott Foundas found that the film was "undeniably boosted by the first-rate performance" of Dominique Pinon, whose "unconventional lead character" and "wickedness paired with heroic charisma fit perfectly with Lelouch's belief that nothing is like." it seems". Fanny Ardant again shows “appropriate glamor as an enigmatic, globetrotting author”.

Craig Butler of the All Movie Guide praised the "intricate, fascinating storyline [...] that is a small miracle in itself". Dominique Pinon is "excellent" in his role; his portrayal has "the perfect finishing touch". The “breathtaking” Fanny Ardant seduced the audience “with her sheer strength and charisma”. Roman de Gare is "captivating, enticing and full of delicious twists" and therefore "a terribly entertaining film".

Individual evidence

  1. Roman de Gare translates as 'station novel', a book you might pick up to read on a train journey and then discard when you arrive at your destination. Lelouch's film is the cinematic equivalent, enjoyable fluff that your mind will discard after the closing credits - but worth seeing nevertheless. 2. “Pic gets an undeniable boost from the ace performance of the short, beady-eyed Pinon, whose unconventional leading-man looks and sly mixture of malevolence and heroic charisma are perfectly in keeping with Lelouch's conviction that nothing is quite as it appears to be . Ardant projects suitable glamor as the enigmatic, globetrotting authoress.
