Couscous with fish (original title: La graine et le mulet ) is a 2007 French film directed by Abdel Kechiche .
action
Slimane Beiji is of Maghreb origin and has been working in a shipyard in the port of Sète for 35 years . He is divorced and lives in the hotel of his lover and her daughter Rym, who regards him as her second father. Even if the work is getting harder and the earnings are getting smaller, he tries to stay close to his now grown and married children and to support them. After he is released, he wants to make his dream of a couscous restaurant come true on an old ship in the harbor. Authorities and competition make it difficult for him to realize his dream. Then there are the quarrels in his extended family and only Rym is enthusiastic about the project, which with the technical help of his youngest son Riadh is still taking shape and becoming the hope of his entire family. However, when a festival, at which he was also supported by musicians friends, was supposed to celebrate the opening of the restaurant, a catastrophe ensued . His son Majid discovers his mistress, the wife of an influential local politician, among the guests. He runs off and does not notice that the prepared couscous is in the back seat of his car. Slimane tries to find him, his moped is stolen from him by teenagers and he follows them on foot. But the youngsters only make fun of his desperate efforts. In the meantime, Rym tries to distract the increasingly drunk guests from the lack of food with a belly dance performance and to save the situation in the restaurant. At the height of her screening, Slimane is seen falling and the film ends abruptly.
