Porsche 944 Turbo Cup

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Porsche 944 Turbo Cup was a German brand cup racing series from Porsche . In the championship held from 1986 to 1989, uniform racing cars based on the Porsche 944 Turbo were used.

history

In 1986, Porsche founded its first brand championship with the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup, with the aim of offering an inexpensive racing series for popular sport alongside professional motorsport. This should enable young up-and-coming drivers to gain experience alongside professional drivers under the same technical conditions. Porsche had commissioned touring car and two-time DRM champion Dieter Glemser as the cup manager .

The cup races were held in the first racing season in 1986 as part of the newly founded Supercup , mostly on German racetracks. From the 1987 season, the number of runs increased and races were held in other European countries such as Belgium , Italy , Spain , Austria , Czechoslovakia and Hungary until 1989 . Between 1987 and 1989 the brand championship races were held in addition to the Supercup with racing events from the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), the sports prototype world championship and Formula 1 .

One year after the brand championship was founded, the Porsche importer Sonauto launched the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup France in 1987 in France , which was held until 1990. In Canada, the CASC Rothmans Porsche Turbo Cup was also founded in 1988, a brand cup based on the 944 Turbo, which replaced the CASC Rothmans Porsche Challenge Series that already existed there .

In 1990 the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup was replaced by the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany .

The cup racing cars introduced in 1986 were based on the Porsche 944 Turbo . The body corresponded to the production vehicle. However, the rear seats had been removed and instead of the standard sports bucket seats had been installed. A roll cage was built in to protect the driver .

Only minor changes were made to the chassis. The rubber mounts of the wheel suspensions were harder and the spring and damper coordination was tighter compared to the series. The cup vehicles also had stronger stabilizers installed. The racing cars had standard tires from Dunlop in the dimensions front 245/45 VR 16 on 8-inch and rear on 255/40 VR 16 on 9-inch Fuchs alloy wheels. From the 1987 season onwards, the Fuchs wheels were replaced by lighter magnesium wheels of the type "telephone disks" and all Cup vehicles were equipped with an anti-lock braking system.

The engine with 162 kW (220 PS) and the exhaust system with the regulated three-way catalytic converter were identical to the production model. To prevent tampering with the engine management system, the Bosch Motronic control unit, the knock control sensor and the boost pressure valve were sealed with a special film. From 1987 onwards, all vehicles had more powerful engines installed, which now developed 184 kW (250 hp).

The first racing cars had a new price of 78,900 DM in 1986 . This rose steadily over the years and finally ended in 1989 at DM 98,200.
