Jörg van Ommen , who was runner-up in 1986 , took part again in the last Cup championship .

Roland Asch and van Ommen, who both competed in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) at the same time , were the strongest drivers of the racing season and each won eight or two races. Georg Pacher was only able to assert himself and win there at the run on the Salzburgring .

At the end of the season, Roland Asch was able to defend the title again and secured the championship for the third time, ahead of Jörg van Ommen, who was runner-up in the cup for the second time. Due to his success in the 944 Turbo Cup championship, Asch was also known as the "Mister Porsche Cup".

After the end of the 1989 season, Porsche stopped hosting the 944 Turbo Cup. Instead, the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany was re-launched for the following year, replacing the Turbo Cup.
