The 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup was held for the first time in the newly established Porsche 944 Turbo Cup brand championship. The first run took place on April 27, 1986 on the Nürburgring , the season finale on September 21, 1986 there too. A total of seven races were held in Germany and Belgium this season.

Overall winner was Joachim Winkelhock with 271 points.

The premiere of the 944 Turbo Cup was a success for Porsche. The concept of 30 to 36 vehicles per race, which were driven by newcomers to well-known professional drivers, some of whom took part as guest starters, was well received by the audience, the media and the motorsport enthusiasts.

At the last race on September 21 at the Nürburgring, Joachim Winkelhock, Jörg van Ommen and Roland Asch still had a chance of winning the title. Joachim Winkelhock and Jörg van Ommen had already won two races. With a first and second place in the races at the Norisring and Mainz-Finthen , Roland Asch also had the chance to win the championship title in the last race.

In the race, van Ommen took the lead and led to Winkelhock until the penultimate lap. Roland Asch had already fallen behind and could no longer intervene in the fight for the title. Winkelhock took the opportunity when van Ommen opened the line a little in a curve and pulled past. Van Ommen was unable to counter in time, even assuming that he still had to drive one more lap, and ultimately finished second in the race and also in the championship.
