The Circuit Zolder (pronounced: Solder) is a 3977 meter long race track in the town of Zolder -Terlaemen near Hasselt in Belgium . It was planned by the Dutchman Hans Hugenholtz and opened in 1963 by the local motorsport club Zolder. Between 1973 and 1984, ten times the total was here Belgian Grand Prix of Formula 1 is discharged. In 1980 the Belgian Grand Prix for motorcycles took place here.
The Circuit Zolder is best known for the fact that the Canadian Gilles Villeneuve died on this racetrack in an accident during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. Instead of the fast right-hand bend at the time, the so-called Gilles-Villeneuve chicane now exists at the accident site .
In 2002 and 2019 the DTM was also a guest in Zolder, but nowadays mainly Benelux racing series (e.g. Belcar , 24 Hours of Zolder , Formula Ford , Formula Renault ) drive here .
On August 26, 2007 a race of the Champ Car series was held on the slightly modified track . Sébastien Bourdais won the race . On October 21, 2007 and October 19, 2008 , races for the international FIA GT championship took place on the course . On June 20, 2010, two races of the World Touring Car Championship and Formula 2 were held on the circuit . In 2011 the WTCC repeated its event and a race for the FIA GT1 World Championship also took place over a weekend in 2011.
