history

The first race of the DTM started on July 18, 2004, but was not part of the championship. The route was then 2.85 km long. In the first race, Bernd Mayländer's vehicle tore a manhole cover out of its holder when it was driven over and the Mayländer Mercedes-Benz stopped in the middle of the track, suddenly braked by the impact with the manhole cover. The race was canceled and all 72 manhole covers were welded in place. Due to the delay, only the first race could be restarted, the second race was canceled. Gary Paffett in a Mercedes-Benz won the race.

In 2010 the DTM started again in Pudong, this time with a 2.465 km long, new route. A DTM race in Shanghai on the Shanghai Pudong Street Circuit was originally planned for November 6th as the season finale. However, the race was canceled before the start of the season. It was not approved by the Chinese motorsport authorities, as the World Touring Car Championship is already being held on the Chinese Guangdong International Circuit this weekend .
