Bernd Mayländer (born May 29, 1971 in Waiblingen ) is a German racing driver .
Career
Like many racing drivers, Mayländer found his way into motorsport at the end of the 1980s in karting . In the following years he rose to the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) with Mercedes-Benz via Formula Ford and the Porsche Carrera Cup 1995 . With Mercedes he switched to the FIA GT Championship in 1997 and drove in the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR sports car race .
In 2000, he won together with Uwe Alzen , Michael Bartels and Altfrid Heger on a Porsche 996 GT3 R , the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife .
Mayländer competed in the DTM for the Manthey Racing team in the Mercedes-Benz CLK in 2001 and 2002 . In 2001 he won the last race at the Hockenheimring . In 2003 he drove for Persson Motorsport . In 2004 he contested his last season in the DTM with the Rosberg team .
In addition to his assignments as a racing driver, Mayländer has been the official driver of the Formula 1 Safety Car , which is currently a Mercedes-AMG GT , since 2000 . His co-driver is Richard Darker .
In May 2005, he was one of 18 drivers involved in the world record run for Mercedes, where 100,000 miles were completed around the clock in 30 days of continuous load at an average of 224.823 km / h in three standard E-320-CDI models .
Mayländer has been supporting the German motor vehicle trade campaign "Safety Cars for Safety Kids" since mid-2007. The guilds of the German motor vehicle trade have the safety of the smallest road users in their sights. They provide kindergartens with a package that they can use to playfully prepare children for driving. These include safety vests , reflectors, traffic signs , traffic lights , traffic cones and bobby cars designed as safety cars.
