The German Touring Car Masters 2001 was the second season of the German Touring Car Masters ( DTM ). The first run took place on April 22nd, 2001 at the Hockenheimring and the season finale also took place on October 7th at the Hockenheimring.

A total of 20 races were held in Germany , Austria and the Netherlands . Two runs were carried out on each of the 10 race weekends.

Overall winner was Bernd Schneider in the AMG-Mercedes CLK DTM with 161 points. For Schneider it was the third title win after 1995 and 2000. He was the first driver to defend the DTM championship title.

history

background

After the DTM restarted in 2000 as the German Touring Car Masters, some changes to the regulations were introduced for the 2001 season. These concerned the process of the tests, the training, the two races and the allocation of points.

Regulations

Instead of a ten-minute function test , a 15-minute rollout and two 90-minute test sessions were estimated on Fridays, which was more attractive for fans .

On Saturday morning, there was a one-hour free practice session for the final fine-tuning of the car. Qualifying took place in the early afternoon . Each driver had twelve laps available that he could complete in 45 minutes. The driver with the best time was on pole position in the qualifying run on Sunday .

For the first time since the 1988 DTM season , there were no two runs over a distance of around 100 km. Instead, a qualification run was run as a short sprint over 35 km to determine the starting order for the race over the approximately 100 km. Between the two runs, the drivers and teams had 25 minutes to refuel the cars, change tires or carry out repairs. In the race, the drivers were obliged to make a pit stop in which all four tires had to be changed, but were not allowed to be refueled. The races got off to a flying start .

In the qualification run, only the first three pilots, in the order 3–2–1, received points. In the race, points were awarded according to the scheme 20–15–12–10–8–6–4–3–2–1 for the first ten drivers. There were no deleted results in the championship standings.
