The HWA AG is an established in 1998 automakers, the racing activities for the Daimler AG operates and operates development and production of vehicles and components for automotive manufacturers in the premium segment. The company emerged from the motorsport department of AMG, which had existed since 1967 (since 2005 Mercedes-AMG ).

history

In 1999, 51% of AMG was taken over by DaimlerChrysler AG. At the same time, the motorsport department was spun off from Mercedes-AMG and re-established as HWA GmbH. Hans Werner Aufrecht , the founder of the team, named it after his name.

For use in the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1999 , the CLK was further developed by HWA into the CLR , without having to be based on a road car as the LM-GTP (the appearance was nevertheless adapted to the CL). Due to the extreme design of the chassis and aerodynamics, there were three serious accidents in training and, despite aerodynamic adjustments, in warm-up and in the race. At high speed, the vehicles got under-air on bumps, took off and rolled over. After the third accident, the last remaining CLR was immediately taken out of the race and later sold to a private collector.

DTM

For the year 2000, the DTM could be revived together with Opel , but not as a championship based on series touring cars, but with special regulations and thoroughbred racing cars with identical parts such as gearboxes and brakes. Here, the AMG-Mercedes from HWA mostly dominated over the works Opel and the private Abt- Audi, which could only achieve a championship title in one year thanks to concessions to the regulations. After the official entry of Audi in 2004, the competition was stronger, but less numerous with the departure of Opel after 2005. In December 2006, HWA GmbH was converted into HWA AG. The financial investor Toto Wolff and co-investors participated in the company. On April 19, 2007, the company went public on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, which brought some of the shares into free float.

In the 2007 season, Aufrecht and his HWA AG team are operating four Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the DTM. The most successful driver of the HWA team is Bernd Schneider with seven championship titles and three runner-up titles in the DTM, ITC and FIA GT championships.

Paul di Resta for HWA AG, German Touring Car Masters 2014 - Hockenheimring

Paul di Resta won the championship in 2010 against his brand colleagues Gary Paffett and Bruno Spengler . At the same time, HWA AG secured first and second places in the team championship.

In 2015 , HWA won the drivers' championship with Pascal Wehrlein , and again in 2018 with Gary Paffett . The HWA team won a total of nine drivers' titles for Mercedes-Benz until the brand withdrew from the DTM at the end of 2018.

Other motorsport activities

From 2003 the company also acted as an engine supplier for Formula 3 . Initially only in the Formula 3 Euro Series , since 2006 also in the British Formula 3 Championship . While Opel also supplied engines to the Formula 3 Euro Series in the 2007 season, Volkswagen was the only competitor in the 2009 season.

Since the end of 2018, the team's motorsport activities have been carried out under the name HWA Racelab .
