Mitchell "Mitch" Evans (born June 24, 1994 in Auckland ) is a New Zealand racing driver . He is two-time champion of the Toyota Racing Series (2010 and 2011). In 2012 he won the GP3 series . From 2013 to 2016 he drove in the GP2 series . He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2016 .

Career

Like most motorsport enthusiasts , Evans began his career in karting and was active in the sport until 2007. In 2007 he switched to formula racing and took part in three races in the New Zealand Formula First winter series. He finished his first season in 18th place overall. He then competed in New Zealand's Formula First in the 2007/2008 season and finished ninth overall. In 2008 he took part in the New Zealand Formula Ford winter series for the first time and won the championship title with seven wins from twelve races.

For the 2008/2009 season, Evans switched to the New Zealand Formula Ford . He won 6 of 21 races and was runner-up behind Richie Stanaway . Following the season Evans went to Formula Ford championships in Australia and was runner-up in the Australian and Victorian Formula Ford. He also made his debut for Team BRM in the Australian Formula 3 championship . He took part in the season finale and won the second race. At the age of 15, Evans became the youngest driver to have won a race in the Australian Formula 3 championship. In 2010 Evans initially competed for Giles Motorsport in the Toyota Racing Series , the highest monoposto series in New Zealand. Evans won his debut race and three races in total. At the end of the season he decided the title with 915 to 912 points against Earl Bamber for himself. Evans then returned to the Australian Formula 3 Championship and started again for the BRM team. Skipping a race weekend, Evans won 8 races out of 17 starts. At the end of the season he was defeated by Ben Barker , who competed in every race, with 219 to 220 points and was runner-up. In 2011 Evans returned as defending champion to Giles Motorsport in the Toyota Racing Series. He won the New Zealand Grand Prix at the Manfeild Autocourse . At the age of 16, Evans became the youngest racing driver to date to win an international Grand Prix. He held this record until 2015 when it was beaten by Lance Stroll , who was a few months younger. Evans won 7 of 15 races and defended the title with 973 to 805 points from Nick Cassidy .

Following the Toyota Racing Series, Evans moved to Europe and completed his first season in the GP3 series . He started for MW Arden , the team of his manager Mark Webber . He won a race and finished the season in ninth place with 29 points. Internally he had to admit defeat to Lewis Williamson , who had scored 31 points. In addition, Evans took part in an event of the British Formula 3 Championship and the Macau Grand Prix . In early 2012 , Evans competed for Giles Motorsport for two Toyota Racing Series race weekends. He achieved all pole positions and was first and second twice.
