The Hong Kong ePrix 2016 (officially: 2016 FIA Formula E HKT Hong Kong ePrix ) took place on October 9 at the Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit in Hong Kong and was the first race of the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship . It was the first Hong Kong ePrix.
report
background
The Hong Kong ePrix 2016 was the first race in the FIA Formula E Championship to take place exclusively on a Sunday. Before that, the races took place exclusively on Saturdays or as a double header on Saturdays and Sundays. For the first time, the teams used the new front wing, the look of which was more futuristic and should make the vehicle design stand out even further from other formula vehicles. In addition, the maximum power during recuperation has been increased from 100 to 150 kilowatts, which means that the drivers have more energy available during the race. This should enable a significantly higher speed in racing.
Adam Carroll , Maro Engel , Mitch Evans , José María López and Felix Rosenqvist made their debut at this ePrix in the FIA Formula E Championship, as did Jaguar Racing and Techeetah . António Félix da Costa and Jean-Éric Vergne drove for their new teams for the first time.
Sébastien Buemi , Lucas di Grassi and López received a so-called FanBoost , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy.
training
Di Grassi was fastest in the first free practice with a lap time of 1: 02.381 minutes ahead of Buemi and Daniel Abt .
In the second free practice, Vergne was fastest with a lap time of 1: 02.350 minutes ahead of Nicolas Prost and Sam Bird .
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Before qualifying, the race management decided to remove the curbs in a chicane, which led to several accidents and complaints from numerous pilots. Di Grassi, Robin Frijns and Qinghua Ma hit the lane in this chicane, after the Frijns accident qualifying had to be interrupted for around 30 minutes.
Nelson Piquet qr. Was fastest with a lap time of 1: 03.099 minutes ahead of Oliver Turvey and López. The individual time trial for the first five positions, called Superpole , was canceled due to the delay caused by the accident at Frijns, so Piquet received three points for pole position.
Loïc Duval , who had qualified for eighth place on the grid, was moved three positions back because he drove too fast during the shakedown the day before with red flags. Carroll received the same penalty for driving too fast in free practice with red flags.
run
The race lasted 46 laps.
At the start, the positions at the top remained unchanged. In the narrow first bend, a backlog formed on the inside of the lane, so that Nick Heidfeld and Duval overtook several vehicles on the outside lane . At the exit of the bend, Bird overtook his team-mate López and the vehicles came into contact. While Bird was able to drive on without any problems, López then touched the barrier and damaged his vehicle. Buemi took advantage of the situation and overtook López before turn two . When braking into turn two , Félix da Costa first ran into Abt. Prost driving behind had to brake hard so that Ma Qinghua hit him, who in turn was hit by di Grassi. For Qinghua, the race was over with a broken front suspension.
On the second lap, Heidfeld, Rosenqvist and Duval passed López, and the race management showed the fried egg flag for Abt, as the rear wing of his vehicle had come off after the collision on the first lap. He drove into the pits for repairs and lost two laps until his team sent him back out onto the track without a rear wing.
López quickly lost further positions and was only twelfth on the fifth lap. At the same time di Grassi was shown the fried egg flag because his front wing was damaged and the race management feared that di Grassi could lose parts of the front wing. On the sixth lap, Bird overtook Turvey, who one lap later also had to let Buemi pass. Di Grassi came to the pits on the eighth lap to stop repairs, but he lost significantly less time than Abt and was still in one lap with the leaders. One lap later, Vergne pitted with technical problems and changed his car. Since the distance up to the end of the race was too great to be driven through with a vehicle, he concentrated on achieving the fastest lap, which he initially managed on lap 16.
On lap 14, Rosenqvist spun and hit the track barrier. He drove his damaged vehicle into the pits and got into his second vehicle. On lap 17, López, who was driving directly in front of the leader Piquet, also hit the lane after a suspension break. Piquet had to brake hard to avoid a collision with López's vehicle and also hit the barriers. In contrast to López, who retired, he did not damage his vehicle in the process, so that he could continue driving, now in third place. The race management sent the safety car out onto the track to rescue López's vehicle .
Abt and di Grassi used the safety car phase on lap 18 to change vehicles. Since the recovery of the wreck was delayed, Buemi, Heidfeld, Duval, Turvey, Prost and Jérôme D'Ambrosio also drove to change vehicles on lap 20 . They all fell behind di Grassi, who was now in ninth place. The race was reopened at the end of lap 21. Piquet immediately drove to change vehicles and fell back to 15th place. Buemi overtook di Grassi and was now in eighth place.
On lap 24, Félix da Costa, Engel and Stéphane Sarrazin, the next drivers came to the pits to change vehicles, one lap later Bird, Carroll and Evans. Bird and Evans couldn't start their second vehicle due to technical problems. Bird fell back one lap, Evans even had to give up the race completely. The last driver to change his car was Frijns on lap 26.
After the pit stops, Buemi led in front of di Grassi, Heidfeld, Prost, Turvey, D'Ambrosio, Duval, Félix da Costa, Piquet and Engel.
Frijns, who had significantly more energy available due to his late car change, overtook Engel on lap 30. Duval suffered from braking problems and gradually lost more and more positions. Vergne gave up the race on lap 34, the battery on his second car was empty. Frijns also overtook Piquet on lap 37 and was now behind Félix da Costa. Both quickly caught up with D'Ambrosio and Turvey and overtook both in quick succession. The positions at the top remained unchanged, with all drivers at least two seconds apart so that there were no battles for positions.
Buemi won ahead of di Grassi and Heidfeld. The remaining points were placed by Prost, Félix da Costa, Frijns, D'Ambrosio, Turvey, Engel and Sarrazin. The point for the fastest race lap went to Rosenqvist.
