Maro Engel (born August 27, 1985 in Munich ) is a German automobile racing driver . In 2007 he was runner-up in the British Formula 3 Championship . He competes in the DTM from 2008 to 2011 and 2017 . From 2016 to 2018 he drove in the FIA Formula E Championship .

Career

Engel began his motorsport career in karting , where he was active until 2000. In 2001 he switched to the single-seater racing and was immediately third in the German Formula BMW Junior. The following season he competed in the German Formula BMW and finished the championship in eighth place. In 2003 , Engel switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series for Opel Team KMS . After he - unlike his teammate Timo Glock - was without a win or points after the first five events, he was replaced by Hendrik Vieth . In the overall standings he finally finished 31st. In the following seasons, Engel did not find a cockpit for a complete season. In 2004 he took part in two races of the German Formula 3 Cup . In 2005 he competed in five races for Durango in the Italian Formula 3000 . He came in the points four times and finished the season in seventh place overall.

In 2006, Engel moved to Carlin Motorsport in the British Formula 3 Championship . He won a race in Spa-Francorchamps and finished the season with a total of eight podium finishes in fifth place. Within the team, he had to admit defeat to only one of his three teammates, Oliver Jarvis , who was runner-up. In 2007 Engel played his second season for Carlin Motorsport in the British Formula 3 Championship. He won two races and was runner-up behind Marko Asmer with 208 to 293 points .

In 2008 Engel switched to Mücke Motorsport in the DTM and received a previous year's model of the AMG-Mercedes C-Class . In contrast to his team-mate Ralf Schumacher , Engel did not score any points, but kept up with him in terms of performance. In 2009 Engel scored his first points in the DTM and finished the season in twelfth place overall. He left his team-mate Mathias Lauda behind. In 2010 , Engel stayed at Mücke Motorsport for another year and once again got a new team-mate in David Coulthard . He finished the season 15th and was again placed in front of his teammate.

In 2011 Engel contested his fourth DTM season for Mücke Motorsport. Within the team he prevailed with five to one point against Coulthard and finished the season in 13th place overall. After the season, Engel was diagnosed with myocarditis , which had subsided by the end of the year.

For the 2012 DTM season , Engel was no longer in the Mercedes driver line-up and this year he was in a racing series without a permanent commitment. In GT racing, he contested two races each in the International GT Open and the Australian GT Championship, in which he won one race. In 2013 Engel moved to Australia for the International V8 Supercars Championship for the Mercedes team Erebus Motorsport . Engel achieved ninth place as the best result and made it into the top ten only once. While his teammate Lee Holdsworth was 20th with 1361 points, Engel reached 28th overall with 836 points. This made Engel the worst-placed driver who had participated in every race.

In 2014 Engel returned to Europe and competed in the ADAC GT Masters . Together with Jan Seyffarth he started for Rowe Racing . The two racing drivers finished the season on the twelfth championship course. In addition, Engel competed in mass racing and individual races in Mercedes vehicles. He won the Macau GT Cup ahead of his teammate Renger van der Zande .

In 2015 , Engel started for the Mercedes racing team Black Falcon in the Blancpain Endurance Series . He formed a driver trio with Sean Johnston and Oliver Morley . The three achieved a second place in the Pro-Am rating and finished it in 13th place. Furthermore, Engel was again active in grassroots racing and he again won the Macau GT Cup. In 2016 , Engel competed again for Black Falcon in the Blancpain Endurance Series. He stayed without points in the overall standings this season. He also contested two races each in the GT Asia Series , in the Intercontinental GT Challenge and in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship . In addition, he entered again in popular sports races. He won the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring .

For the season 2016/17 returned angel in formula racing back and kicked for the Venturi Grand Prix in the FIA Formula E Championship at. On his debut in Hong Kong , he scored points straight away in ninth place. At the end of the season he finished 17th overall. In addition, Engel received a Mercedes cockpit in the DTM for the 2017 DTM season after a five-year break.

At the beginning of the 2018 season it was announced that Engel would vacate his cockpit in the DTM in order to concentrate on GT racing and his involvement with Venturi in the FIA ​​Formula E championship. He finished the 2017/18 season with fourth place as the best result in twelfth place overall. For the new season he no longer received a contract as a regular driver.

Personal

Engel grew up in Monte Carlo , Monaco . Engel went to school with Nico Rosberg and is friends with him. Keke Rosberg is responsible for Engel's first motorsport experience because he persuaded Engel's father to give him a kart for his sixth birthday. Previously, Nico Rosberg, who was two months older, had already received a kart. Michael Schumacher is a good friend of Engel's parents.
