The Goldsteig is a certified hiking trail between Marktredwitz and Passau and runs through the Upper Palatinate and Bavarian Forests . It opened in September 2007. The routes of the already existing long-distance hiking trails Burgenweg , Oberpfalzweg, E6 and E8 are used . Thanks to an optimized route and signage, the Goldsteig meets all the criteria of a rated hiking trail.

Starting in Marktredwitz in the Wunsiedel district in the Fichtelgebirge, the Goldsteig runs through the Upper Palatinate and Bavarian Forests to the destination Passau. Shortly after Thanstein , the Goldsteig divides into the north route (291 km) and the south route (253 km), which unite again shortly before Passau.
