The Gold Käsereien Bayerwald GmbH is a German company in the dairy industry in Bavaria . The part of the name Goldsteig refers to the medieval Goldener Steig trade route between the Danube and Bohemia . A hiking trail has also been named Goldsteig since 2007 .

Key figures

Around 3,100 cooperative producers, mainly from Eastern Bavaria, but also around 150 from the neighboring Czech Republic , deliver around 890 million kg of milk annually. These are processed into around 102,300 tons of products, which are sold in all countries of the European Union. Around 720 employees, many of them contract workers , generate annual sales of around 470 million euros, with an annual profit of around 1.7 million euros. The milk payment payments amounted to EUR 314 million.

Compared to 2006, these numbers mean increases of 38% (milk delivery), 46% (products), 52% (employees) and 57% (sales).

owner

Goldsteig's shareholders are four producer cooperatives . These are: Dairy Cooperative Cham eG (around 1100 suppliers), Ostbayrische Milchwerke eG in Passau (around 940), Goldsteig Käserei Plattling eG (around 640) and Milchwerk Straubing eG (around 350).

Locations, product range

The main product is mozzarella , others are hard cheese , semi- hard cheese , lactose , protein-enriched sweet whey powder (whey protein concentrate, WPC), cream cheese ( mascarpone ), whey protein cheese ( ricotta ), butter, whey and whey concentrate. The main factory (company number: BY 301) is located at the headquarters in Cham , where the administration and logistics center with high-bay warehouse is also located. Mozzarella, hard cheese and hard cheese are produced in the cheese dairies (three by mid-2017, two since then). In the Tittling plant (company number: BY 261), the cream cheese is made “Italian style” and butter is produced on a small scale.

A new plant has been built in Stephansposching , Michaelsbuch district , since 2017 . The previous plant in Plattling was closed at the end of June 2017, which ended soft cheese production ( camembert , red smear cheese ) at Goldsteig. Since August 19, 2018, whey concentrate for processors in the food industry has been produced in the first construction phase of the new plant. Further construction phases include the construction of a processing center for the production of butter and cheese from the fat produced during the production of the whey concentrate. The plant is to replace the Tittling site from 2020 and massively increase butter production. The future processing capacity will be up to 325,000 l milk per day, the production capacity 38,000 tons / year concentrate and 15,000 tons / year cream.

Brands

Own brands are Goldsteig and Cammino D'Oro , next to it is for private label manufacturing and the processing industry.

history

The company was formed on 1 July 1992 as a joint venture of Goldsteig dairy Plattling eG (est. 1927) and the dairy cooperative Cham (est. 1940). Through the merger with Ostbayrische Milchwerke eG (founded in 1939) in 1998, the product range was expanded to include semi-hard cheese. In 2000 Goldsteig merged with the dairy cooperative Milchwerk Straubing eG (founded in 1935 in Eglsee ). In 2006, a fully automated hard and semi-hard cheese dairy was built in Cham. At the beginning of 2013 a line of the own brand Goldsteig was brought onto the market, in the production of which no genetically modified feed and production materials are used. At the beginning of 2018, Goldsteig decided, like other companies in the industry before, to prohibit its milk suppliers from using glyphosate- containing weed killers on self-cultivated land . The prohibition does not apply to unfamiliar areas from which purchased feed originates.
