Sonnen is a municipality in the Lower Bavarian district of Passau .

geography

Geographical location

Sonnen is located in the Danube Forest region in the Lower Bavarian Forest and is the highest municipality in the Passau district at an altitude of 700 to 900 meters. After Passau is 28 km, by Hauzenberg 9 km Waldkirchen or Wegscheid km respectively. 13 The border with Upper Austria is only 8 km away.

climate

Despite the high altitude of the municipality, which suggests a harsh climate, there are more hours of sunshine on average than in most other municipalities in Eastern Bavaria. But there are also much more severe winters than in the lower elevations of Passau, and it is not uncommon for a strong, cold wind to blow from the northeast, the so-called boehm wind . Most of the houses were built in a sheltered, south-west facing position to avoid the unpleasant winds. It is also easy to observe when a storm front from the Czech Republic moves over the 1,300-meter-high border ridge of the Hochficht into Bavaria.

history

Until the 19th century

Between 1130 and 1150 an Eberhardus de Sona handed a servant over to the then Bishop of Passau.

The former village in the Hochstift Passau was in 1803 with most of the Hochstiftischen area in favor of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand III. secularized and only fell to Bavaria in 1805. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 . In 1877 the community name Stüblhäuser was officially changed to Sonnen .

Incorporations

On May 1, 1978, a large part of the Oberneureuth community was incorporated.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the municipality grew from 1,393 to 1,427 by 34 inhabitants or 2.4%.

The parish church Maria Himmelfahrt was built between 1858 and 1861 according to plans by Leonhard Schmidtner .

In 2017 there were 230 jobs subject to social security contributions in the municipality. Of the resident population, 641 people were in employment subject to compulsory insurance. This means that the number of out-commuters was 411 more than that of in-commuters. 19 residents were unemployed. In 2016 there were 26 farms.
