history

Until the founding of the forerunner churches

Windorf is as Winidorf first mentioned in 1010 in documents than King Henry II. The Kloster Niederburg handed. With this it came in 1161 to the Hochstift Passau . The district of Otterskirchen was founded around the year 800 and was first mentioned in a document in 1165. The castle in the Rathsmannsdorf district probably dates from the 10th century. In the middle of the 13th century, the place was raised to the market.

The market had extensive rights vis-à-vis the Hochstift (Lower Court etc.) and belonged to the Hochstift Passau until the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 . It was one of the few parts of the bishopric that fell to Bavaria in 1803 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , the municipal edict of 1818 created the municipalities of Rathsmannsdorf, Otterskirchen and Windorf.

19th and 20th centuries

In Windorf, shipbuilding (the "Schopperei") was still flourishing in the 19th century, as eight foremen with 130 foremen made no less than 14 different types of ships, including the Waidzille, which is widespread on the Danube. In addition to Germany, the orders came from Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. The Bruckzillen for the ship bridges of Pressburg and Komorn came from Windorf until the 1890s. Only at the beginning of the 1950s did the last Windorf Schoppermeister stop working.

Until 1972 the market was part of the district of Vilshofen and came with the division of the district of Vilshofen to the district of Passau. On May 1, 1978, parts of the dissolved municipality of Albersdorf were added.

religion

The population is predominantly Roman Catholic. There are Catholic parishes in Windorf, Otterskirchen and Rathsmannsdorf. The responsible Protestant parish is Vilshofen.

legend

Windorf Bear in Pirka in Styria

A legend tells of the "Windorf bear catch". One day a young man is said to have spread the rumor in the market that a horrific monster was sitting on a tree near Hacklstorf. He thought he saw a bear. Armed with flails and scythes , the market dwellers set out to kill the beast. As they got closer, however, they noticed that the bear was just a Capuchin monk praying his breviary and nibbling cherries. The Windorf “bear catchers” went home ashamed and have since endured the ridicule of the neighborhood.

On the occasion of the 25-year partnership between Windorf and the municipality of Pirka in the Austrian state of Styria , a stone sculpture for the "Windorf Bear Catch" was inaugurated there in 2010. The southern part of the community, which existed until the end of 2014, also bears the name Windorf.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1975, the previously independent community Otterskirchen and Rathmannsdorf were incorporated. A part of the dissolved community of Albersdorf was added on May 1, 1978.

Assignments

On May 1, 1978, parts of the area were ceded to the neighboring community of Aicha vorm Wald .
