history
Until the church is planted
The Stone Age collection in the town hall shows the traces of early settlement. The area belonged to the Niedernburg monastery since 1010 due to a donation from Emperor Heinrich II . Between 1200 and 1300 Turna, Tiena or Tuna (= Danube) are often mentioned as localities. In the Middle Ages, the Hofmark was the seat of various local nobility, the Hofmark lords. In 1257 a "Wichard de Tyerna" was mentioned, in 1258 "Wernhardus de Tuna". The fief of the Passau bishopric was owned by the Thyrnau (also Tyerna or Tirna) and the Kienast around 1400. Achatius von Tyerna took part in an uprising against the bishop in 1431. Around 1450, the Pschaechel appeared next to the Kienast on Thyrnau. The Pschaechel died out around 1580. Other spellings for the name of the village were Thürnnen in 1518, Thyma in 1616 and Thürnau in 1812. The property then came to the Lords of Schätzl.
Ulrich von Schätzl founded the hospital around 1620. In 1676, shortly after his wedding in Passau , Emperor Leopold I went on a hunting trip to Thyrnau, where Johann Sebastian Schätzl was his host.
In 1692, Bishop Johann Philipp von Lamberg bought the estate. Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian had the manor house expanded into a hunting lodge. In 1785 Thyrnau became a parish vicariate and on August 16, 1786 a parish. Thyrnau fell to Ferdinand of Tuscany in 1803 as part of the secularization with the largest part of the high esteemed territory and came to Bavaria in 1805. In 1818 the political municipality was established.
20th century
In 1902, Cistercian women took over the castle and converted it into a monastery. One of the mother churches of the Southern Bavarian Forest can be found in the parish (and district) of Kellberg .
