Parish church of Thyrnau

The parish church of St. Franz Xaver is the Catholic parish church of the parish of Thyrnau .

Until 1785, Thyrnau belonged to the parish of Kellberg , a current district of Thyrnau. In 1765 benefice and in 1785 parish vicariate , it was raised to a parish in 1786 by Prince-Bishop Joseph Franz Anton von Auersperg .

The construction of the church could largely be financed from the donation stock of the local Loretto Chapel . The architect was from 1765 to 1769 the Hofpalier Anton Gärtler. In 1771 the church was consecrated by Prince-Bishop Leopold Ernst von Firmian . In 1899 the sacristy, presbytery and the niches of the two side altars were added, and in 1928 the presbytery was expanded further.

The rectory connects to the church in the south. The two buildings are combined in the west by a double-gabled facade. The high altar from 1929 bears an altar painting by Johann Georg Unruhe from 1769. It depicts the death of the church patron, St. Franz Xavers . The figures in the chancel also date from the time the church was built.

The two side altars were brought here from another church in the 19th century. The south side altar from the 17th century bears a picture with the death of St. Joseph . The north side altar was built at the beginning of the 18th century and shows the martyrdom of St. Catherine . The altar is flanked by two late Gothic figures of saints. The pulpit and baptismal font are Rococo creations .

The large cross on the south side from the late Renaissance comes from the former Franciscan monastery in Passau . The most important work of art in the church, however, is “the Thyrnauerin”, a stone figure of Mary with the boy Jesus. It is a work created in the 15th century by Niclas Gerhaert van Leyden or another artist from the Danube School . The statue originally stood in the Christophorus Church and came to the parish church in 1928.
