The Abbey Country is a former possession of the monastery Niederburg whether Passau . Since the early 13th century, the area belonged to the secularization in 1803 to the Bishopric of Passau with the archbishop as secular and spiritual leader. The area is located in the Bavarian Forest north of the Danube and east of the Ilz . The historic Goldener Steig trade route ran through it. The main place was Waldkirchen , which was endowed by the Passau prince-bishops with extensive rights of freedom.

The compartment is of great importance as a cultural landscape rich in species and structures and is therefore also viewed as a refuge for endangered plants and animals. Together with the Neuburg Forest , it forms the natural spatial main unit 408 Passau Abteiland and Neuburg Forest within the Upper Palatinate-Bavarian Forest.

history

The Bavarian Forest north of Passau was in the 9./10. Settled in a first wave in the 19th century. According to a (not definitely authentic) document, King Heinrich II (from 1014 emperor) donated large areas north of the Danube to the Niedernburg women's abbey in Passau in 1010 . The name Abteiland is still in use today for the closed former manorial area of the monastery between the rivers Danube , Ilz and Rodl and the border ridge. In the early 13th century the area came under the Passau monastery . In the late Middle Ages, the area of influence of Passau aristocratic lords and ecclesiastical manors extended far into today's Mühlviertel . Waldkirchen played a special role in the compartment. With the market rights first confirmed in a document in 1285 , Waldkirchen also received its own jurisdiction from the Passau prince-bishop, which was the lowest court level. There was once a pillory on the market square in Waldkirchen .

The market judge was appointed by the prince-bishop and had roughly the duties of a mayor. He exercised his office in the presence of six council jury members. During the annual “E'haft” ( marriage detention session - from the Germanic “Ewa, Eha” = law) legal, police and community matters were dealt with. All citizens and residents (residents without citizenship) had to take part.

regional customs

Every year in July, the market judge days take place in Waldkirchen as a traditional event. They are reminiscent of the time when the market was still part of the department of the Principality of Passau.
