history

Waldkirchen market square

Until the 18th century

The Waldkirchen market owes its origins to the important Goldener Steig trade route in the direction of Bohemia , which probably dates back to the turn of the millennium. A travel report from 1203 by a pastor in or from a “church in the forest” suggests for the first time Waldkirchen. According to tradition, received Waldkirchen 1285 the market law and was the main town in the so-called Abbey land , formerly owned by the monastery Niederburg whether Passau that since the turn of the 13th century the property of the Bishopric of Passau was.

In 1300 the Passau prince-bishop Bernhard von Prambach confirmed the market rights, the sole salt deficit in the Passau compartment and the road constraint , but the Waldkirchen people later did not succeed in defending the rights for the then lucrative salt trade. From that time until 1806 the place had a market court with extensive magistrate rights.

In 1458, Waldkirchen was threatened with arson by the Hussites under Kaplirz de Sulewicz . The Passau bishop Ulrich von Nussdorf then had a curtain wall built with ten towers and two gateways around 1460 . In the oldest view of Waldkirchen from 1720 by Joseph Haas, the wall is still completely in place, some remains of the fortifications have been preserved to this day, other parts were largely reconstructed to enhance tourism.

The place was secularized in 1803 with most of the bishopric area in favor of Archduke Ferdinand of Tuscany and only fell to Bavaria in 1805 . In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Fires

In its history, between 1492 and 1945, six devastating city fires struck Waldkirchen. The fire of 1862 destroyed 140 houses. The last fire occurred after shelling by American troops in the last days of the war on April 26, 1945. Eight people were killed, 48 houses and the church were destroyed and 120 families were left homeless.
