Robert Zillner (born August 4, 1985 in Passau ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

Born in Lower Bavaria, he began his career at TSV Wegscheid and then played at TSV Waldkirchen in the sixth-class regional league until 2005 . Here he was discovered by SpVgg Unterhaching and committed to the second team by the Munich suburbs. After he had developed into a top performer in the fourth-class Bayernliga , he was promoted to the first team by professional coach Ralph Hasenhüttl during the winter break of the 2007/08 season .

Start of the professional career at Unterhaching

In the second half of the season Zillner, who is mainly used in the central midfield, played as a regular player in all 15 games in the then third-rate Regionalliga Süd , where he also scored a goal. In the end he qualified with Haching for the newly created single-track 3rd division and signed his first professional contract.

In the new third division he scored his first goal in professional football against Wacker Burghausen on the fifth day of the 2008/09 season . In the game against Dynamo Dresden on November 23, 2008, he scored two goals in one game for the first time. The SpVgg narrowly missed the promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga . To reach fourth place in the table, Zillner contributed eight goals as a top performer. Also in the two following seasons, the Lower Bavarian was a regular at Unterhaching, although he was no longer used from the beginning of April due to injury.

For SpVgg Unterhaching, Zillner played a total of 87 games in the third division. This puts him in fourth place in the club's list of record players for this division. He also made two appearances in the DFB Cup .

With Fürth in the 1st Bundesliga

For the 2011/12 season, Zillner made a free transfer to the traditional Franconian club SpVgg Greuther Fürth , where he signed a two-year contract. Initially only used in the second team, he came on December 16, 2011 (19th matchday) in a 5-0 home win against 1. FC Union Berlin for his first appearance for the clovers. On March 24, 2012, Zillner tore a cruciate ligament in his left knee in the 3-0 home win against Karlsruher SC and was out for the rest of the season. At the end of the season, Zillner rose to the 1st Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history with the cloverleaf . The midfielder contributed to this success seven missions with one goal. The 2-0 goal in the 2-0 win against MSV Duisburg on March 2, 2012 (24th matchday) was his first goal in the 2nd Bundesliga.

Robert Zillner made his Bundesliga debut on November 17, 2012 (12th matchday) in the 1: 3 defeat in the away game against Borussia Dortmund , where he prepared the goal for the interim 1: 1 by Zoltán Stieber . Greuther Fürth ended the 2012/13 season bottom of the table and immediately relegated back to the 2nd Bundesliga. Zillner only made six appearances in the upper house, and he never stood on the field for 90 minutes.

New beginning in Sandhausen

After the end of the 2013/14 season, in which he had only played eight games for Fürth due to injury, Zillner moved to league rivals SV Sandhausen . He received a two-year contract there. Already in his first appearance in the starting line-up - the 1-0 win against TSV 1860 Munich on September 23, 2014 - Zillner tore a cruciate ligament and was no longer available to his team for the rest of the season.

Robert Zillner made his comeback for Sandhausen on matchday 1 of the 2015/16 season. In the course of the first half of the season he played his way into the starting eleven of the Electorate of Palatinate and scored the first goal for his new club in a 3-1 win against Karlsruher SC on November 20, 2015 . It was also Zillner's first competitive goal in over three and a half years. After the season that Sandhausen finished 13th in the 2nd Bundesliga, Zillner got no new contract and left the club.

At the end of August 2016, Zillner moved to his Lower Bavarian homeland, to the Bavarian regional league team SV Schalding-Heining .

After a season in the Regional League Bayern , Zillner moved to FC Sturm Hauzenberg in the Landesliga Bayern Staffel Mitte, where his brother Maximilian Zillner is also active. There he ended his active career in July 2019.
