Schiefweg is a district of the town of Waldkirchen in the Lower Bavarian district of Freyung-Grafenau . Until 1970 Schiefweg formed an independent municipality.

location

Schiefweg is about a kilometer northwest of Waldkirchen city center.

history

The place is mentioned for the first time in a Passau traditional note from 1190 to 1200, in which "Albertus de Scefwegare" testifies to the legal act taking place. Certainly the place already had a certain importance at that time, since it was probably created as a mule place on the Goldener Steig . Its main function was that of a resting place where the mule drivers could spend the night and their animals had to be looked after .

In 1256, in addition to Waldkirchen , Böhmzwiesel and Fürholz , the residents of Schiefweg were also given the right to trade on the Goldenen Steig by Prince Bishop Otto von Lonsdorf from Passau . Until the decline of trade in the 17th century, Schiefweg was certainly a not insignificant place on the Goldener Steig. At the time of the Passau bishopric it was subordinate to the Leoprechting nursing court with the Waldkirchen office. The place was in 1803 with the largest part of the Passau area in favor of the Electorate of Salzburg by Ferdinand III. Secularized by Tuscany and fell to Bavaria in 1805 . So the place came to the newly formed regional court Wolfstein in 1806, became an independent municipality with the Bavarian municipal edict in 1818 and in 1862 part of the newly formed regional court Waldkirchen.

The town gained fame far beyond the county boundaries thanks to the local poet Emerenz Meier , who was born in Schiefweg in 1874 and emigrated with her parents to Chicago in 1906, where she died in 1928.

In the municipality of Schiefweg, the land consolidation was carried out as the first municipality in the district , which other municipalities also joined due to the positive experiences that were made with it. On July 1, 1970, as part of the regional reform in Bavaria, the community of Schiefweg with 1,311 inhabitants was incorporated into what was then Markt Waldkirchen.
