Foundation and development steps

The tool factory was founded in 1919 by the three brothers Otto , Karl and Willi Dowidat. With almost no capital, they began manufacturing adjustable wrenches , punches and other hand tools . In 1926 , due to lack of space, they moved to Remscheid- Lüttringhausen , where the main plant and headquarters of the Gedore Group are still located today.

Largely spared from war damage, production was resumed on a small scale shortly after the end of the war. Due to family disputes, the company was split up into Gedore under Otto Dowidat and the Dowidat works under Willi Dowidat. The third brother, Karl, had died in 1933. In the post-war period, Gedore grew to 720 employees at the Remscheid-Lüttringhausen parent plant. After the death of the company founder Otto Dowidat in 1975, his son Karl took over the management of the company. Currently, his daughter Karen Dowidat and her son Dr. Christian Dowidat the family business in the 3rd and 4th generation.

Over time, a group of companies was created through acquisitions and start-ups, which was converted into a holding structure in 2012 and thus set the course for the current corporate structure. In this way, numerous different brands were integrated into the group of companies. In 2018, the various brands were transferred to an umbrella brand structure in order to meet market requirements. Under the Gedore umbrella brand, there are two lines, Gedore and Gedore red, which focus on high quality and safe hand tools and tool-based solutions. The traditional Ochsenkopf brand was retained for forestry tools from Gedore.
