Florian Langenscheidt (born March 7, 1955 in Berlin ) is a German publisher , book author , speaker and venture capitalist.

youth

Langenscheidt, great-great-grandson of the publisher's founder Gustav Langenscheidt , studied German language and literature , journalism and philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich after graduating from high school and did his doctorate on “ Advertising for contemporary literature ”. Following his doctorate , he studied publishing at Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) and worked for a publishing company in New York for two years . He then completed a Master of Business Administration course at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France .

In 1985, Langenscheidt joined the Langenscheidt publishing group as the fourth generation of the family, where he held various publishing and managerial functions. From 1990 to 1994 he acted as a personally liable partner with his father Karl Ernst Tielebier-Langenscheidt and his brother Andreas Langenscheidt . In 1994 Florian Langenscheidt withdrew voluntarily from the operational management of the Langenscheidt publishing group, but continued to be a limited partner in the Langenscheidt publishing group. At the beginning of 2013 the publisher was sold to Günther Holding GmbH. From 1988 to 2001 Langenscheidt was also a member of the board of the Bibliographisches Institut & FA Brockhaus AG , the majority of which belonged to the Langenscheidt publishing group. From 2002 he was a member of the supervisory board until the company was sold in 2009.

Langenscheidt dealt with the effects of the Internet at an early stage and in 1992 was the founding chairman of the Electronic Publishing Working Group of the Publishers' Committee of the German Book Trade Association . Langenscheidt acts as a business angel and venture capitalist for companies in the media and internet sectors. He is or was a partner in i: FAO AG, Newsports, Ciando, TV Guide, GAP, IP Planet, Jochen Schweizer GmbH, buecher.de/Mediantis, Upsolut Sports AG, Transatlantic Ventures AG, SmartLaw Media GmbH, Berlin Valley and Tandem.

Langenscheidt wrote numerous columns for the magazines Capital , Forbes and Max . From 1993 to 2001 he presented numerous editions of the nachtClub and the Münchner Runde for Bavarian television . He has been a popular speaker since 2002. He has authored several books on great interpersonal feelings that were published by Heyne Verlag and became bestsellers. He publishes books on German brands and brand names in his own publishing house, Edition Deutsche Standards, as well as with Gabler Verlag . social commitment

Since Langenscheidt withdrew from the operational media business, he has devoted himself more to social and ecological projects. In 1994 he initiated the non-profit children's organization Children for a better world and has been chairman of the board ever since. He is a partner and board member of the German Children and Youth Foundation . In addition, he is a member of the board of trustees of the following organizations: Reading Foundation , World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) , German Olympic Society , German Museum , German Founder's Prize and German Sports Aid . Langenscheidt was also a member of the board of directors of Atlantik-Brücke , a member of the Chairman's Council of the Museum of Modern Art , New York and the Board of Trustees of the Institute for Advanced Studies at Princeton University and a member of the World Awards jury .

Florian Langenscheidt has also been supporting the Heraeus Education Foundation as a member of the Foundation Advisory Board since 2014 .

Private life

Langenscheidt had been married to the industrial daughter Gabriele Quandt-Langenscheidt since 1986 , who also illustrated his books. They have two sons together. The two separated in 2008 when his new fatherhood became known. Langenscheidt first appeared publicly in autumn 2008 with his new partner Miriam Friedrich, who had just given birth to twins. They got married in February 2012; They separated in 2016.

Marketing activities

In 2006 Langenscheidt took part in the campaign You are Germany .

In December 2009 Langenscheidt became active as a testimonial for the New Social Market Economy initiative . He got involved in a PR campaign for the statement "Social market economy makes it better ... because it combines competition with humanity."

Honors

In September 2008 Langenscheidt was elected into the "German Speakers Hall of Fame".

In March 2016 he received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

In May 2017 he and Gabriele Quandt received the Foundation Prize of the Federal Association of German Foundations.
