The Heraeus Education Foundation (Bertha Heraeus and Kathinka-Platzhoff Foundation) is a non-profit foundation under civil law based in Hanau and a partner in the family company Heraeus . It has been committed to responsible, long-term thinking and acting in educational issues since 1965 and promotes schools through interdisciplinary advanced training for their teachers and school administrators in the field of personnel and organizational development.

History of the foundation

The foundation was established in 1965 by Bertha Heraeus (1875–1967), daughter-in-law of the Hanau entrepreneur Wilhelm Carl Heraeus , with the original aim of giving financially disadvantaged children access to education. The foundation received endowments in 1976 from Kathinka Platzhoff (1896–1981) and in 1981 from Clara André (1893–1981), both born Heraeus. Since 1976 the foundation has been called the Bertha Heraeus and Kathinka Platzhoff Foundation. In 2010, however, as part of a repositioning, it was given the addition of the Heraeus Education Foundation , as it is called from now on. The foundation is a member of the foundation network Initiative Frankfurter Stiftungen. From 2007 to 2014 the foundation was a member of BioFrankfurt - The Network for Biodiversity .

Foundation activity

The focus of the foundation's work is on increasing educational success at schools in Germany. To this end, the foundation holds seminars, lectures, panel discussions and fireside chats for teachers and school principals. Registration for the advanced training courses is open to all teachers and school management members. Approx. 90% of the costs are borne by the foundation. The foundation's activities are divided into three areas:

  • Developing competencies: Since the demands on teachers in everyday school life go far beyond the purely technical side, the focus here is on the further development of personal and social skills of teachers.
  • Shaping schools: In seminars for school management teams, management skills in the school system are taught.
  • Experiencing contexts: Every spring since 2007, the Heraeus Education Foundation has held the Pro Diversity panel discussion in the Senckenberg Nature Museum in Frankfurt, where personalities from the fields of science, business, politics and school discuss topics that harmonize nature and business in front of over 400 guests. In addition, the foundation regularly organizes fireside chats, where representatives from schools, science, business, politics and culture meet in a personal and confidential setting to exchange ideas on a subject.

Since 2016, the foundation has been offering an online seminar in addition to its face-to-face seminars. Under the title "Satisfied and successful - the art of motivating students as teachers", teachers learn how to better understand their students' motivation to learn.

Since the early 1970s, the foundation has supported more than 70,000 participants, mostly students, teachers and parents, as part of its projects and programs. The foundation currently reaches well over 1,000 teachers and school principals every year with its advanced training courses.

Since 2018, the Heraeus Education Foundation has been commissioned by the Hessian Ministry of Education to provide school management qualification in Hesse (QSH).

Foundation Board of Directors, Foundation Advisory Board and Foundation Ambassador

The foundation is currently managed by a four-person, honorary board member and a full-time managing director, after Jürgen Heraeus , who had been a board member of the Heraeus Education Foundation since the foundation's establishment, resigned from the board on December 31, 2016 . The foundation board consists of: Beate Heraeus (chairwoman), Alexandra Heraeus, Ursula Heraeus, Astrid Schulte and Eric Seng ( Hessian Ministry of Science and Art ). The work of the foundation has been accompanied by a foundation advisory board since May 2014. The 27-member body includes personalities from science, politics, society, business and the school system. The aim is to anchor the foundation's idea of “personality goes to school” more firmly in public awareness. Together with the board of directors and the management, the advisory board is supposed to discuss current issues of education policy and their social impact and to support the foundation in an advisory capacity.

"Foundation ambassadors" have been soccer world champion Philipp Lahm since 2015 and cabaret artist Eckart von Hirschhausen since 2018 .
