history

The Anger of Hohenau

The town of Hohenau, which surrounds a wide meadow , was founded around 1380. Large estates in today's municipal area were owned by the Puchberg family of Wildenstein, of which the Erasmus Chapel in Buchberg still commemorates; this former castle chapel is the only remnant that reminds of the splendor and fame of the Knights of Wildenstein. Directly opposite are the only rudimentary remains of the Neuenpuchberg Fortress , which were uncovered in the early 1990s. It was built in the 15th century under Hartlieb von Puchberg, ministerial of the Passau bishops and at the same time vassal of the dukes of Bavaria, as the northern border of the compartment country.

The name Hohenau can be traced back to the landscape, the "high Au". Hohenau had been the benefice of the parish of Perlesreut since at least 1476 and was raised to a parish in the 16th century, which was incorporated into the collegiate monastery of St. Salvator in Passau until 1803 . The parish church of St. Peter and Paul was built around 1737 and enlarged in 1964.

The village burned down for the last time in 1834.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, part of the dissolved community of Wasching was incorporated. On January 1, 1978, as part of the regional reform in Bavaria, Schönbrunn am Lusen was added. The municipal area was considerably enlarged by the incorporation. The municipality of Hohenau thus includes 24 localities and hamlets .

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the community grew from 3,286 to 3,320 by 34 inhabitants or 1%. On December 31, 2003, Hohenau had 3,509 inhabitants.

coat of arms

Hohenau

The coat of arms, which has been in use since 1968, shows a gold cut gemstone from a green hill, from which a two-leaf plant with two red flowers grows.

The gemstone refers to the Freyung carbide plant , the plant represents a swamp blood-eye that characterizes the Große Weihermoos in the municipality.

Schönbrunn am Lusen

Schönbrunn am Lusen

Divided into an arc of green and gold; a silver ax and a glass blowpipe with a glass ball crossed diagonally above; below a stylized flower blossom with a red central leaf and two blue leaves on the side.

The ax is the tool for clearing and building settlements and the glass pipe is the most important handicraft tool for making glass. The floral motif, popular in folk art, is reminiscent of the widespread reverse glass painting that was practiced in the last century.

  • The SV Hohenau 1949 e. V. was founded in December 1949 by war refugees and expellees from Eastern Europe . After the game had to be temporarily suspended due to a lack of players in 1955, the sports club was brought back to life in December 1960. For a long time only football was played in clubs, now volleyball, women's gymnastics and skiing are also offered. The first team in the soccer department played in the Niederbayern district league from 2009 to 2011, from which they were relegated in 2011. From the 2015/16 season to 2017/18 they were again represented in the Niederbayern Ost district league, as they were able to achieve the district championship title in the Bayerwald district league in the 2014/15 season. In 2018 they were relegated to the district league and now play in the district league Passau. The game is played in the Lusen Stadium.
  • The DJK SG Schönbrunn am Lusen 1961 e. V. offers football, table tennis, curling, winter sports and theater. The first soccer team plays in the 2013/14 season in the medium forest district class.
  • The Juniorenfördergemeinschaft (JFG) Lusen 2010 e. V. was founded by SV Hohenau, DJK SG Schönbrunn and TSV Mauth on May 15, 2010. The reason for the decision to join forces in youth work was the declining number of births in the Freyung-Grafenau region and the resulting problem that the individual clubs can no longer carry out their youth work. A year later, SV Finsterau also joined the JFG.

The following associations also exist:
