The re's Carbidwerk Freyung limited liability in 1903 by Anton and Alfred restart, the sons of Gotthelf Anton re- established (1836-1911). The object of the company is the production of calcium carbide (until 1974) and synthetic gemstones (since 1913), including artificial diamonds , which are exported worldwide .

The plant is located in the Buchberger Leite , a wild brook gorge on the Wolfsteiner Ohe , in the area of ​​the Hohenau community in Lower Bavaria . The next two places are Buchberg and Aigenstadl. Three hydropower plants are supplied with water from the Reschbach and Saußbach via an elaborate pipe and tunnel system, the construction of which began in 1899, and two reservoirs . The electricity generated was used in the carbide plant for energy-intensive processes in electric arc furnaces . Some of the crystals produced were discovered in the search for active media for lasers and sold to the jewelry industry. The carbide was previously required to operate gas lamps and acetylene generators for generating welding gas.

In order to supply the carbide plant with energy, a system of hydroelectric power plants , canals and tunnels was built.

The Saußbach is dammed west of Freyung ( 48 ° 48 ′ 45.99 ″  N , 13 ° 31 ′ 46.51 ″  E ) and most of the water is channeled through an underground tunnel along the slope. In doing so, the water retains its height compared to the stream. This difference in height is in Saußbachwerk ( 48 ° 48 '57.02 "  N , 13 ° 31' 7.47"  O used) for generating electrical energy.

The water from the Reschbach is also withdrawn and piped along the slope. In the Reschbachwerk ( 48 ° 49 ′ 20.64 ″  N , 13 ° 31 ′ 5.43 ″  E ) it generates electricity. After the work, the water is not fed back into the Reschbach, but rather in a concrete canal along the slope, following the Reschbach. The approximately 600 m long canal extends into the Saußbach valley, with the diverted water flowing in the opposite direction to the Saußbach.

There the water from the two power plants unites, crosses under the Saußbach and is led in a 1200 m long tunnel to the moated castle above the carbide plant. This tunnel was driven by hand from both sides over several years. There have been several accidents during careless explosives work. In the carbide plant, the water drives a third power plant. Then the water flows through another tunnel into the Wolfsteiner Ohe formed from Reschbach and Saußbach .
