In 1987, the Bayerwaldforum cultural association was founded in Viechtach as the first forerunner of Lichtung Verlag. Their common goal was to publish a critical cultural magazine for the Bavarian Forest . With the magazine lichtung , they realized their goal as early as the end of 1987, the magazine was published every two months. In the following year the magazine was renamed magazin lichtung and the catchment area was expanded to include all of Eastern Bavaria . In 1996 the frequency of publication was extended to quarterly. In 1989, books were also published in the edition lichtung . For financial reasons, the Bayerwaldforum sold the publishing business to the newly founded Lichtung Verlag GmbH in 1990 .
