Harald Grill

Harald Grill (born July 20, 1951 in Hengersberg ) is a German writer . His work includes Bavarian and written German poems , short stories , plays , radio plays and radio features .

Life

In 1956 Harald Grill came to Regensburg with his parents . From 1973 to 1988 he worked as a teaching assistant and has been a freelance writer since then . He has lived with his family in the community of Wald (Upper Palatinate) since 1978 . In the 1980s he became known for writing critical texts on topics such as homeland , war and environmental destruction ; his play Jorinde and Joringel in the Wackersdorfer Wald (premiered in 1988 at the Regensburg Theater ) refers to the controversy surrounding the planned Wackersdorf reprocessing plant . In 1989/90 Harald Grill was a scholarship holder in the script workshop of the University of Television and Film Munich . In 2000/01 his project twice went home attracted national attention : two walks, once from the North Cape and then from Syracuse on foot to Regensburg.

Between 1989 and 2014, the focus of Harald Grill's work is a trilogy of novels about walking. In 1995 the novel Wedding in the Dark was published . Harald Grill tells the love story of his parents, about the return of a leg amputated farmer's son and his love for a Silesian refugee girl. The Lower Bavarian market Hengersberg is hidden behind the Steinberg market in the novel.

This was followed in 2010 by learning to walk, a novel in stories in which Harald Grill describes a childhood in the 1950s and 1960s. Learning to walk in the language also plays an important role here, whether it is the written language, the suppressed Bavarian dialect, the incomprehensible Latin of the altar boys or the mysterious English of the American soldiers.

The author has been working on a double novel project since 2002. In these two previously unpublished travel novels, too, the focus is on walking, walking, carrying and collecting, whether it is specifically about the backpack or about memories and material collections. As a result of his project Twice Home (2000/2001), he “went for two walks” through the continent of Europe as a space of remembrance in which his own life and the biographies of friends and acquaintances, including people he met on the way, are stored , can be classified as well as historical and geographical conditions. The poems in the volume on the open road can be understood as road markings that mark the path from the love story of the parents to the childhood in Regensburg, which ends with the death of the father, to the “walks through Europe”.

Harald Grill is a member of the board of the Oskar Maria Graf Society as well as a member of the PEN Center Germany , the Association of German Writers , the Regensburg Writers' Group International and the New Society for Literature Erlangen.

Grill was married and has two sons.
