The Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus (OKH), located in the so-called Kebbel Villa and also known under this name, is an artist's house with an art museum in the Schwandorf district of Fronberg .

history

The villa building, in which the actual Upper Palatinate Künstlerhaus I is located in the Wilhelminian style with a corner tower with an associated park or garden, was built in 1890 as a residential building and has been a listed building since 1974 .

Master builder on behalf of Josef Eigners († 1885), owner of the Gottfried Eigner and Sons ironworks (today Fronberg Guss ), was then Johann Urban . In 1889 the landowner Andreas Kebbel, who came from the Braunschweig area, acquired the property, which was then owned by the family for three generations until it was sold to the municipality of Fronberg in 1966, which gave the building its name. The municipality of Fronberg initially used the building to accommodate social welfare recipients. After Fronberg was incorporated into Schwandorf , the house also served as a youth center . In 1981 the decision was made to use the building as an artist's house. After extensive renovations, the villa opened its doors in 1988.

From 1988 to 2013 the artist and curator Heiner Riepl was the first director of the house. His successor was Andrea Lamest, who had previously managed the European artist house Schafhof in Freising . The German-American art historian Christina Lanzl has been running the house since 2019.

Upper Palatinate Artists House II

In May 2000, the Upper Palatinate Künstlerhaus II was added to the Künstlerhaus, which mainly presents art from the region and houses the art collection of the Upper Palatinate district, as an "international artist house", which primarily serves artists of the exchange program of the artist network "Res Artis" to live and work.

The institution itself has been part of the "Res Artis" network since 1994 and, along with the Künstlerhaus Villa Waldberta , the International Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia and the European Künstlerhaus Schafhof, is one of the four renowned Bavarian institutions that maintain artistic exchange programs. The number of visitors is stated by the Upper Palatinate Forest Tourism Association as around 10,000 people per year.
