The latter extends from Pfreimd in the north to Regensburg in the south and has its origins in the Miocene . All economically exploitable lignite deposits were mined until the 1980s.

history

Until the church is planted

Remnants of a prehistoric settlement were discovered through finds during soil movements for building work. The first documentary mention goes back to the year 1150. The chronicler assumes that the foundation was already before the turn of the millennium.

The Wackersdorfer Church was first mentioned in 1217, it is said to have been the original parish of Schwandorf according to tradition. The construction of the parish church of St. Stephen began around 1400, but it was demolished in 1953 as part of the resettlement. With the Reformation from 1548 to 1617, religious innovations also came to the place. The Catholic faith was reintroduced in 1618; from 1669 Wackersdorf was an independent parish.

The first attempts at industrial exploitation of the Wackersdorfer earth treasures go back to the year 1800. A total of 1801 different traders are listed. In 1818 the political municipality was established.

19th to 21st century

At the beginning of the 19th century, master tailor Andreas Schuster discovered lignite, the mining of which began around 1840. But in 1845 it was quiet again around the Wackersdorfer lignite. Mining was not fully resumed until 1889; In 1906 the Bayerische Braunkohlen Industrie AG (BBI AG) was founded. The number of employees who worked at BBI AG in the beginning of 1906 had already tripled within three years. Housing had to be created. Before they even thought about relocating the place, a decision was made to create “colonies”, small settlements in which BBI AG employees and their families could find space. In 1908/1909 the Ost-Kolonie was therefore established not far from Alt-Wackersdorf. Until the closure in 1982, the open-cast lignite mine gave the municipality of Wackersdorf its character. With the coal mining came the boom of the small farming village.

The "resettlement of the village of Wackersdorf" was planned for the first time in 1923 and 1924, but could not be realized at that time. The relocation of Alt-Wackersdorf was not finally decided until October 13, 1948. In 1950 the farmers began to be replaced in the course of resettlement. At the same time, building activity began in the “Neu-Wackersdorf” resettlement area. On July 6, 1952, the consecration of the new parish church St. Stephanus and the inauguration of Neu-Wackersdorf took place with the participation of high clerical and secular dignitaries. Around 1200 residents were able to find a new home in this building area.

In the 1970s, Wackersdorf was one of the richest communities in Bavaria due to coal mining.

In 2013 the premiere of Erben des Tertiär , an 80-minute documentary film about the history of Wackersdorf from lignite mining to the dispute over the nuclear reprocessing plant (WAA) to today's cultural and leisure landscape around the lake district.

"At the Red Cross" ( ): To the west of the WAW and not far from the "Chaoten-Eck" was a popular meeting place for many anti-WAA demonstrators.

Incorporations

Until 1961, today's district of Heselbach belonged to the then independent municipality of Oder. After its dissolution, the village of Oder itself went to the municipality of Steinberg am See , and Heselbach was incorporated into Wackersdorf. In 1972 Alberndorf came to the municipality of Wackersdorf. Until then it was an independent municipality with the districts of Höflarn, Imstetten, Irlach, Natermoos and Niederhof. In 1978 the Rauberweiherhaus (previously the municipality of Sonnenried) and Meldau and Mappenberg (previously the municipality of Altenschwand) were incorporated.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 3,905 to 5,265 by 1,360 inhabitants or 34.8%.

Wackersdorf reprocessing plant

Throughout the 1980s, the community was at the center of the disputes over the controversial Wackersdorf reprocessing plant (WAA). After this project was abandoned in 1989, an industrial park was built on the designated area with the settlement of internationally known companies such as B. BMW , Gerresheimer-Wilden and Sennebogen .

From October 2017 the story of the WAA was filmed by the Munich-based film production company if ... Productions . On September 20, 2018, the feature film Wackersdorf by Oliver Haffner was released in cinemas in German-speaking countries. The premiere took place on June 29, 2018 at the Munich Film Festival .

coat of arms

A golden deciduous tree in blue on golden ground, the trunk of which is covered by obliquely crossed silver mallets and silver iron.

Reason: The crossed iron and mallet indicate the mining economic development of the place where lignite was extracted in open-cast mining since 1906, while the heraldic deciduous tree indicates the re-greening of the landscape as part of extensive recultivation measures.

In addition to the traditional coat of arms, the municipality of Wackersdorf has had its own corporate design logo and lettering since the beginning of 2016 .

tourism

After the closure of the lignite opencast mines in the region, the resulting pits were flooded, creating the Upper Palatinate Lake District. In the Wackersdorf area, the Murner See and the Brückelsee were created. With a total area of around 240 hectares, the two lakes are now used by bathers, divers, water sports enthusiasts, surfers and campers. Over the years, a widely ramified network of trails for hiking, cycling and other tourist offers such as the largest go-kart facility in Germany and various play and adventure facilities such as the Wasser-Fisch-Natur adventure park have developed around the lakes. In 2018, the 30 or so local holiday homes, accommodations and guest houses as well as the campsite recorded over 50,000 overnight stays.

Economy and Infrastructure

After the lignite industry was shut down and a nuclear reprocessing plant was rejected , the industrial site of Wackersdorf was settled by well-known companies and businesses through a targeted settlement policy with the support of the Bavarian state government and the energy industry. Corporations such as BMW , Sennebogen or Gerresheimer , in addition to many supplier companies for the automotive industry and other medium-sized companies, guarantee jobs for around 6,000 (as of 2018) employees, of which around 90% are commuters. With its per capita economic strength well above average, Wackersdorf is one of the region's most important economic drivers.

Thanks to the local workplaces and the very good transport connections at the intersection between Regensburg, Weiden, Amberg and Cham, Wackersdorf is recording steady population growth.
