history
In 1329 the place name Schönsee, at that time located in the Nordgau , appears in a deed of ownership of the Lords of Hostau in connection with the city of Hostau (Hostoun) as a place in inheritance , as in the Bohemian Forest area in the settlement area of the West Slavic Chods for about 200 years German new settlers founded. Since 1350 Schönsee was under the feudal rule of the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg and in 1354 became a market town in the Upper Palatinate . Gold was found at the 874 m high Reichenstein in the 14th century . In 1514 Ulrich, Jörgen and Sebastian von Waldow sold Reichenstein Castle, today preserved as the Reichenstein Castle ruins , and the town of Schönsee for 3900 Rhenish guilders to Jobst Schlüsselfelder, Hans Reich and Hieronymus Hollfelder. During this time, the city was granted city rights and a city coat of arms with a water lily stick.
In the 15th and 16th centuries iron hammers were operated in Schönseer Land ; Koehler smoldered the charcoal required for this in the wooded area. In 1530 Hans von Fuchs von Wallburg was the owner of the heirloom Reichenstein-Schönsee estate. When the Palatinate Elector Ottheinrich von Pfalz-Neuburg joined the Evangelical Lutheran Confession after the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 , Schönsee became a follower of the teachings of the reformer Martin Luther for three generations .
During the period of the Thirty Years' War during the recatholicization in Bavaria, Evangelical Lutheran Swedes invaded twice; the church was not spared from the arson in Schönsee. In 1641 Schönsee and a number of other places in the area came to the Fürstete Grafschaft Störnstein , remained there until 1807 and were sold by the Electorate of Bavaria to the newly formed Kingdom of Bavaria after secularization in Bavaria . In the middle of the 19th century at the time of the liberation of the farmers in Bavaria from inheritance and the beginning of industrialization, a fire disaster occurred in Schönsee in 1868. The city was rebuilt and has belonged to the Free State of Bavaria since the end of the First World War and the November Revolution of 1918 .
At the beginning of the 19th century, glass grinding shops replaced iron hammers. New employment opportunities arose at the beginning of the 20th century when a lace school was opened in Schönsee . The high quality level of the tips continues to this day. The fall of the Iron Curtain and the opening of the border with the Czech Republic in 1993 freed the Schönsee area from its peripheral location .
Today tourism in Schönsee is of particular importance as a source of income. In addition to the local gastronomy and parks, the city has sports and leisure facilities and a largely intact, surrounding natural landscape with 120 km of marked, local hiking trails, supraregional trails, such as the E6 and guided cross-border hiking and cycling tours in the Upper Palatinate and Bohemian border area to the Czech Republic. A parking space at the city's outdoor pool has been set up for motorhome owners.
In the Schönseer Land the art of lace making has an old tradition and continues the tradition from the former Weißensulz in the court district of Hostau . Weekend and weekend courses are offered for vacationers and locals to learn and maintain this handicraft. In cooperation with the German Lace Association in Übach-Palenberg , exhibitions are prepared and carried out. The department store Köck in Schönsee offers an overview with a bobbin lace exhibition and purchase opportunity.

Sights, culture, leisure
Catholic parish church of St. Wenceslas
The parish of Schönsee is listed as Schünsee in the parish register around 1350. Presumably, however, there was a Romanesque church as early as the 12th century . Unfortunately there is no record of this. A total of three fires destroyed the Schönsee church. The church was destroyed and set on fire for the first time in 1431 by the Hussites who invaded the entire Upper Palatinate. On February 12, 1641, the church burned down a second time together with the tower during the Thirty Years War. The church burned again during the great city fire in 1867. The church was rebuilt from 1868 to 1874 by craftsmen and artists from the region. The last extensive interior renovation took place in 1997. The church owes its current appearance to this interior renovation. Most of the furnishings date from after 1874. Some of the figures from the old church were saved from the flames and integrated into the new church. Today the Schönsee parish church is a light-flooded church with simple furnishings from the 19th century.
