Location of Josephsthal in Bavaria

Josephsthal is a district of the town of Schönsee in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf ( Bavaria ).

The wasteland of Josephsthal is located south of Schönsee on the eastern edge of the Faulen Ried. The way to Josephsthal branches off the state road 2154 between Schönsee and Preißhof to the west. On December 31, 1990, Josephsthal was still inhabited by two people.

To the west of Josephsthal, in Faulen Ried, serpentinites occur as the first traces of magmatic phenomena towards the end of the Assyntic mountain formation . Since serpentites are resistant to weathering and decomposition, they are only covered by a thin layer of weathering, which manifests itself in poorer vegetation of lichen , heather , bristle grass and pine . In summer you can find groups of the pink flowering knotweed as typical inhabitants of the Borstgrasheide in the Faulen Ried.
