Rackenthal is a district of the town of Schönsee in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf in Bavaria .

Geographical location

The approximately 40 buildings in the village of Rackenthal are located on the slopes of the 736 meter high Schwandner Mountain. To the southeast of Rackenthal the landscape descends steeply to the Gaisthalerhammer in the valley of the Ascha. In the district of Gaisthalerhammer, a narrow road branches off from State Road 2159 to the west, which leads steeply up to Rackenthal. Schönsee is around 6.5 kilometers by road.

history

Racke Thal (as Raekental) was founded in 1285 Duke Urbar as owned by Duke Ludwig II. Of Bavaria first mentioned. In addition, a Swarlzenhorbe (Schwarzenhorb) located near Rackenthal and later submerged was mentioned, the name of which has been preserved in the name Schwarzes Horn for a hill near Rackenthal.

Rackenthal also appeared in the interest books of the Murach office in 1582. It also appears in the draft protocols of 1587. It is marked as Rackenthal Dorff on a map from 1589 . Rackenthal initially belonged to the municipality of Pirkhof. When this was dissolved on January 1, 1946, Rackenthal came to Gaisthal and was then incorporated with Gaisthal on January 1, 1975 into the town of Schönsee.

Culture and sights

In the middle of the village there was a chapel built around 1900. This was torn down and replaced by a chapel built by the villagers themselves.
