Rosenthal is a district of the town of Schönsee in the Upper Palatinate district of Schwandorf in Bavaria .

geography

The hamlet of Rosenthal is located on State Road 2159 in the upper third of the narrow Rosenthal, the breakthrough section of the Ascha from the Schönsee plateau to the Gaisthaler Senke.

history

Between Muggenthal and Gaisthalerhammer, the difference in altitude is 100 meters over a length of 1.5 kilometers. This slope of the Ascha was particularly suitable for the installation of hammers, glass loops and other businesses that used water power. As early as 1813, Heinrich Gareis, the last ruling judge from Winklarn, founded factories here that were referred to as Ober- and Unterrosenthal. Down the Ascha stood the Wilhelmsthal glass ribbon. The Nuremberg manufacturers Karl and Hermann Müller bought the Gareis property in Ober- and Unterrosenthal in 1844. In 1851 they applied for permission to build three additional grinding works, two polishing works and a cutting saw between Unterrosenthal and Wilhelmsthal. The Wilhelmsthal 3 and 4 factories were built in 1852. There were now ten glass loops in the Rosenthal.

The Jewish wholesale merchant Moses Isaak Büchenbacher from Fürth bought all of Müller's property in 1865. His successor was Leopold Büchenbacher. In the hands of the Büchenbacher company, the operations in Rosenthal flourished.

The glass loops were first supplied by Bohemian glassworks, later from Furth im Wald, Weiden and Fürth. Their transport volume amounted to 30,000 quintals a year in the 1880s. First of all, all glass had to be transported on carts. Only in 1913 did transport conditions improve with the completion of the Nabburg – Schönsee railway line .

On March 23, 1913 (Easter), Rosenthal was part of the Gaisthal branch and had 8 houses, 4 glass loops and 83 residents.

In 1933 Leopold Büchenbacher emigrated to the USA after - forced by the anti-Jewish fascist regime - he had sold his property cheaply to locals in Upper Palatinate. This marked the beginning of the decline of this once thriving industry. Today (2013) hardly any traces of the former factories can be found.

In 1969 Rosenthal was still part of Gaisthal and on January 1, 1975 it was incorporated into the town of Schönsee together with Gaisthal.

On December 31, 1990, Rosenthal had 6 residents and was part of the Gaisthal branch.

The hydropower of Asha is in Rosenthal for electricity used.

Culture and sights

A cycling and hiking trail runs through the Rosenthal on the former railway line of the Nabburg - Schönsee railway line, on which a cross-country ski trail is groomed in winter. It leads through a particularly impressive breakthrough valley of the Ascha. This cycle path is part of the Bavarian-Bohemian Friendship Path . On it are the few remaining old buildings of the glass loops and numerous striking rock formations. Despite numerous protests from the population, the beauties of this valley are now (2013) to be destroyed by the construction of a wide road.
