Itabira , officially Portuguese Município de Itabira , is a city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . In 2010 it had about 110,000 inhabitants. Itabira is part of the Belo Horizonte metropolitan area .

The name Itabara comes from the Tupi language and stands for "shiny stone" ( Ita = stone; bira = that shines / shines).

Itabira has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Itabira-Fabriciano since 1965 .

economy

There is a lot of iron ore mining going on around Itabira . The mining group Vale was founded in Itabira in 1942 and is still active in the region today. Itabira Agro Industrial and Itabira Special Steel Company are also based in Itabira.
