course

The Ascha rises in theügellohe as Weißbach, which initially flows over the border to the Czech Republic, and southeast of Plöß (Czech: Pleš) on the Plößer and Wenzelsdorf slopes in Czech territory about 600 m north of the Czech-German border. It is called here Plešsky potok. It flows west and crosses the German border southeast of Friedrichshäng . Until Dietersdorf it is known as "Weißbach". From the Saubergbrücke it is given the name Ascha. It flows, turning more and more south, through Schönsee, breaks through the mountains between the Schwandner Heights and the Frauenstein Massif, meanders through the Gaisthal basin and finally flows into the Schwarzach at Neunburg vorm Wald .

The Czech part of the stream has a length of 2.5 kilometers with a catchment area of 0.58 km².

history

The Ascha (originally: Aschaha, then: Aschach), together with the Schwarzach and Murach, is one of the rivers with Slavic names that end in -aha. In the case of these rivers, it is assumed that their river valleys and the surrounding landscapes were already settled before the year 1000, possibly by Slavs and / or Chodians infiltrated from Bohemia .

Since the 13th century there have been numerous grinding, paper and sawmills between Dietersdorf and Gaisthal, as well as several iron hammers and glass loops that use the water power of the Ascha, which here over a distance of only 1.5 km has a height difference of more than Overcomes 100 m. The last of these factories ceased operations after the end of the Second World War . Today there are only a few smaller hydropower plants left to generate electricity.
