Ensemble Altstadt Schönsee

Picture Schoensee 2010 02.JPG

The ensemble encompasses the town center of Schönsee, which in its current form goes back to the regulated reconstruction after the fire disaster of 1868.

Schönsee lies on the upper reaches of the Ascha on a basin-like area. The core settlement was probably around the parish church, which was rebuilt in its old location. The three rows of streets were laid out parallel to the east-west running stream, which had been dammed up several times to form ponds: next to the water is the slightly crescent-shaped main street with the town hall, which is set back from the row of houses, in the half-length; As the central axis of the elongated oval ground plan, the straight Kirchstrasse is aimed precisely at the western front with the tower of the parish church, while Pfarrgasse serves as the northern longitudinal axis and Dietersdorfer Strasse runs through the north-east facing suburb. The length of the oval is divided by several transverse alleys going off at right angles. The development consists of mostly one- or two-storey residential houses on the eaves side with rearward-facing, originally agricultural buildings. Only on the main street are the properties with their typically simple, but well-proportioned facades, still influenced by the Biedermeier style, a little more elaborately designed and become more modest with increasing distance. The architectural dominant feature is the parish church of St. Wenceslas. There was no city fortification. The ensemble is therefore a testimony to a rational, post-Biedermeier layout of a rural center and trading center in the second half of the 19th century, the structural substance of which changed considerably in the second half of the 20th century through numerous remodeling and new buildings that were adapted in terms of cubature and has been decimated.

Ensemble operating chain Aschatal

GaisthalAscha.JPG

The ensemble includes the Aschatal chain of operations. This stretches west of Schönsee to the section of the river which, over a length of 4.3 kilometers through a narrow forest valley, has a gradient of around 90 meters.

In this area, ten former works can still be seen, which, with skilful management of the headrace channels, could claim an average of eight meters of water drop. The operations were iron hammers, sawmills and paper mills, as well as glass grinding and polishing works, the owners of which belonged to the privileged class who had water and fishing rights and were given preferential treatment in the allocation of wood. The beginnings of the operations go back to the Middle Ages: The Schallerhammer was first mentioned in 1387, the Muggenthalerhammer already existed in the 14th century, the Obergaißthaler Hammer probably dates back to the 15th century. At that time, the iron raw material might still have to be extracted on the spot, later it had to be approached by cart, an effort that was only worthwhile because of the abundant water power and amount of wood. A smaller part of the buildings dates back to the Baroque period, when the technique of glass cutting from France was introduced here; Most of them, however, date from the 19th century. Even if the internal technical systems are largely lost, this chain of works is an important landscape and economic monument, which is unique in the Upper Palatinate and is a testament to the once rich iron deposits in the Upper Palatinate.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
