Ensembles

Ensemble Altstadt and Freyung Pfreimd

The ensemble includes the late medieval city with the suburban extension of the Freyung. Located in the flat triangle of the mouth of the Pfreimd River into the Naab, the settlement required protective fencing early on. Pfreimd was possibly a fortified border point as early as the 10th century, first mentioned in documents in 1188. The lack of an elevation for a mountain fortress was compensated by the creation of two artificial Pfreimd side arms, so that the place was surrounded by water like an island and the apron could be flooded, which is still evidenced by the name "Stadtweiher" for the fields south of the old town.

In 1366, Landgrave Ulrich II had Pfreimd surrounded with walls and towers after the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg had moved their residence here around 1322 . After destruction in the Hussite Wars and a fire around 1481, Pfreimd received city rights in 1497. Apart from a few remnants, nothing of the city wall has survived, and the mighty city tower between the old town and Freyung was demolished in 1854 due to disrepair. The city fire of July 7, 1800 destroyed a total of 136 properties.

However, the basic structure of the city has been preserved to this day and points to a clear urban design from the 14th and 15th centuries; a rectangle slightly rounded at the corners, almost a square, with a bottle neck-like extension of the Freyung to the Pfreimd river crossing, is divided axially along its entire length by a main road. The northern half was divided into three thirds and the middle third reserved for the core cell of the castle courtyard. Since the buildings did not come right up to the main street axis, but rather withdrew to the northern city wall, an area became available for the town square. The interface between the castle courtyard and the market square is dominated by the parish church, which is also the castle church. The southern half of the old town with bourgeois, artisanal or arable-bourgeois buildings mainly from the 16th to 19th centuries. Century was developed with two of the main street parallel longitudinal streets, which are connected to it by cross streets in the ladder rung system.

The city expansion in the street row of the Freyung with two-storey houses on both sides with eaves and gables, predominantly from the 16th to 18th centuries. Century before the bridge crossing over the Pfreimd is completed with two head buildings: on the north side the Franciscan monastery founded in 1593 with the church consecrated in 1594 and the large orchard, on the south side the former citizen hospital and the buildings of the Hammerhof.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
