Johann Schmuzer (also Schmutzer , baptized May 13, 1642 in Gaispoint ( Wessobrunn ); † May 12, 1701 there ) was a plasterer and, together with Caspar Feichtmayr , is considered to be the founder of the Wessobrunn School .

Life

Johann Schmuzer was born in 1642 as the fifth child of master plasterer Matthias Schmuzer and his wife Elisabeth Rohrmoser. After his school years at Wessobrunn Monastery, he probably apprenticed to his father together with his older brothers Matthias and Michael. On February 4, 1664 he married Justina Vogler, with whom he had three sons and two daughters. Justina died in May 1674. At the beginning of 1675 Schmuzer was first mentioned in a document as a master plasterer when he married Anna Heiß. Five daughters and four sons were born in this marriage, including his successor Joseph , whose descendant was Franz Xavier . On May 12, 1701, Johann Schmuzer died probably surprisingly, because he had previously accepted larger assignments, which were then continued by his son Joseph.

Works

In his early years of work, Schmuzer divided the ceiling into geometric fields according to the principle of several schools and placed ornaments there. From about 1690 onwards he carried out his work more extensively with acanthus . He supplemented these filling acanthus ornaments with dividing bars , profile frames and fruit wreaths. He thereby connected the walls with the vault.

Johann Schmuzer made stucco works in numerous Swabian and Upper Bavarian baroque churches , but many of his stucco work was forgotten because the focus was more on the buildings. His main work is the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Vilgertshofen . 104 ecclesiastical and secular buildings could be proven to him:
