Iffeldorf is a municipality in the Weilheim-Schongau district in Upper Bavaria . The place of the same name is both the capital and the seat of the municipal administration. The village was first mentioned in 1080 and was owned by the noble von Höhenkirchen from the 14th century to 1653. Then Iffeldorf was owned by the Wessobrunn monastery until secularization . From around 1860 to 1961 the place was strongly influenced by the Staltach estate of the Maffei family. Iffeldorf has 2682 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) and is particularly known for the ice crumbling landscape of the Osterseen .

geology

Iffeldorf is located in the southern German Molasse Basin , which formed as a northern fore-depth during the formation of the Alps and was gradually filled by the erosion debris. In the course of the ice ages that followed, the molasse deposits were covered in many places with fresh boulders and gravel. The area of the municipality of Iffeldorf is covered by loose sediments of the young moraine of the Isar-Loisach glacier from the Würm glacial period . As around 9700 BC Due to a renewed climate change, the glaciers began to retreat, blocks of ice of various sizes broke off and remained as dead ice in the middle of scree slopes.

Initially, a significant proportion of the melt water from the Isar-Loisach glacier flowed off towards the Starnberger See basin . The debris carried along filled the gaps in the dead ice and built up ice-edge terraces. Later the meltwater flowed further east towards the Wolfratshausen basin . This allowed the dead ice masses south of Lake Starnberg to slowly melt away undisturbed by deposits. It formed dead ice holes , which were filled with water and formed the Osterseen.

This ice-crumbling landscape of the Osterseen with its silting areas, forests and moor areas defines a large part of the municipality: In the north, the Schechen and willow felts extend over large areas - raised bogs that were formed by silting up former lakes and tower over the surrounding area by up to six meters . The lowlands of the Osterseen adjoin this to the southeast. In the south and east of it rise the Eisrandterrassen with the settlements of Iffeldorf and Staltach . The southeast and west of the municipal area is characterized by ground moraines , dead ice holes, low, dry knolls and fens , a small part in the west is in the Eberfinger Drumlinfeld . The settlement area is therefore limited to the gravel terraces in the south.

history

etymology

In various documents the place name appears in the forms "Uffelendorf" (between 1047 and 1062), "Ufelindorf" (1080), "Ufelendorf" (1138), "Uffelindorf" (1152), "Uffelendorf" (1168), "Uffeldorf" (1365), "Uffeldorff" (1484), "Yffldorf" (1488), "Uffldorf" (1510), "Yffeldorff" (1537), "Iffldorf" (1719), "Ufildorf", "Ufflindorf", "Huffelnorf" , "Upheldorf", "Uiffeldorf", "Ufldorf", "Eyfeldorf", "Yffeldorf", "Uphelendorf" and "Uffilindorf".

The name indicates that the settlement, like Uffing am Staffelsee, was founded by members of the Uffo clan.

From the beginning to the 14th century

A few Bavarian row graves from the 6th and 7th centuries are the first traces of settlement in the municipality of Iffeldorf. The oldest documented mention that can be properly dated comes from 1080.

From the end of the 11th to the middle of the 13th century, the area between Ammersee and Starnberger See was under the control of the Counts of Dießen , who later called themselves Counts of Andechs . In this sphere of influence, the noble sex of the Lords of Iffeldorf was also important. The last documented mention of a person of this gender comes from the year 1365: “Konrad von Ufeldorf” and his wife “Cäcilia” made a will, attested by “Heinrich, Chirchher ze Uffeldorf”. The lords of Iffeldorf were the ancestors of the Counts of Eschenlohe . Finally, the farms that later made up the Hofmark Iffeldorf came into the possession of the Lords of Seefeld , who in 1341 sold the Osterseen to Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian , who passed them on to his Ettal monastery . When the Seefelder in the male line became extinct, their property was divided and fragmented.

Late 14th century to 1803

At the end of the 14th century, the Hofmark Iffeldorf came into the possession of the noble von Höhenkirchen , who at that time also owned the Hofmark Königsdorf . Their castle was on the site of today's primary school. The first known Höhenkirchner, who bore the title "zu Iffeldorf", is mentioned in a monastery document from 1385, sealed by "Ulreich der Hohenkircher ze Uffeldorf". In the second half of the 16th century the people of Höhenkirchen experienced a heyday and were highly regarded. This time ended with the Thirty Years War , according to which the castle burned down in 1634. The Höhenkirchner, who became increasingly impoverished in the following years for various reasons, had to sell the Hofmark Iffeldorf to the Wessobrunn monastery for little money in 1653 - after they had previously sold Königsdorf . The Benediktbeuern monastery had previously rejected an offer to buy. This ended the rule of the noble von Höhenkirchen in Iffeldorf, which lasted around 400 years.

Crucial for the decision to buy the Wessobrunners were the Easter lakes with a large fish population. When at that time a third of the year were designated fasting days , the fasting food was very important. In order to gain feudal lordship over the lakes, however, a barter had to be concluded with Count Ferdinand II von Toerring-Seefeld in 1682 , although he only held half the legal share. On October 6, 1698, seven courtyards, three granaries and the parish church burned down in a major fire. In 1701 the Heuwinkl chapel and in 1708 the new parish church were consecrated. In 1749 Wessobrunn received full fishing rights in the lakes in exchange from Ettal Abbey.

Secularization from 1803 to the end of the Second World War in 1945

Villa Maffei in Staltach

Iffeldorf belonged to the secularisation of 1803 the monastery Wessobrunn . The place was part of the Electorate of Bavaria and formed a closed Hofmark , whose seat was Iffeldorf. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , the municipality that belonged to the Weilheim district court was created with the municipal edict of 1818 . In the years 1856 and 1858, the Munich industrialist Wilhelm von Weber bought the three Staltacher Höfe to mine peat in the Filzen . For this he brought the financially strong, also from Munich, Joseph Anton von Maffei on board. In 1861 - the cooperation between the two did not work - Maffei Weber paid 150,000 guilders and became the sole owner of the Staltach estate. The Staltach estate, with agriculture and forestry, modern livestock farming, a brewery , sawmill , blacksmith , wagon and peat mill , was established. In July 1870 Maffei already owned 2,885 days of land. He also had a villa built as a summer residence in Staltach. In 1865 the Tutzing – Penzberg railway line was opened with the Staltach station. As a result of the influx of external workers from the estate, the peat factory and the Penzberg mine , the village grew. It is also the Staltach workers who founded a local SPD association in Iffeldorfer in 1908 .

In 1877 there was the second big fire in local history with sixteen destroyed buildings, which were immediately rebuilt. In the same year Joseph von Maffei initiated the construction of a hospital ( Lage ) with 22 beds and a doctor's house ( Lage ). In the First World War 42 Iffeldorfer lost their lives. In 1927 the Staltach brewery was sold to Paulaner and the Staltach peat factory. Iffeldorf was fully connected to the power grid by 1939.

In World War II, 46 Iffeldorfer men died on the fronts. The war in Iffeldorf was relatively calm until the end of the war. In the last weeks of the war a bomb was dropped over the municipality. As a result of a radio call to the Freedom Action Bavaria on 27 April 1945 some Iffeldorfer disarmed the local SS men's. When they received support a little later, they tried to shoot the resistance. All but one managed to escape. He was found shot the following day between Seeshaupt and Iffeldorf, together with a Pole who had presumably escaped from a prison camp. SS units or the field gendarmerie are suspected to be the perpetrators . On April 30, 1945, the American armed forces occupied Iffeldorf in the afternoon after fighting that morning. The evening before, a train from Allach with around 2400 to 2600 concentration camp prisoners in 45 cattle wagons from the Dachau concentration camp , which were liberated by US troops, stopped near the Staltach train station due to a power failure . About 1,500 to 1,700 of them spent the next eight weeks in the houses and farms of the village of Iffeldorf, which at that time had about 1,000 inhabitants. Then they came to the Feldafing DP camp . Seventeen prisoners were rescued from the train dead and buried on site, later they were transferred to the Feldafing DP cemetery.

After the Second World War

In the post-war period , many refugees and displaced persons came to Iffeldorf, construction activity increased and numerous new homes were built; nevertheless there was a housing shortage. Agriculture lost more and more importance, so the Staltach estate closed in 1961, the Leidel estate in 1966 and in 1972 the last Iffeldorfer estate Obereurach ceased operations. In 1971 the Munich - Garmisch-Partenkirchen motorway was completed up to the Iffeldorf junction. As a result of the regional reform in Bavaria , the district of the municipality, the Altlandkreis Weilheim, was dissolved on July 1, 1972 , and Iffeldorf became part of the Weilheim-Schongau district . On January 1, 1978, the Steinbach part of the dissolved community of Frauenrain (today the community of Antdorf ) with about 15 residents was incorporated. In the 1970s, around 90% of all households were connected to the central drinking water supply. During this time, bathing tourism at the Osterseen took on such proportions that in 1981, after only three years of preparation, the Osterseen nature reserve was designated. It has been a research object of the Technical University of Munich since 1986 , which converted three properties in Iffeldorf into a limnological station between 1986 and 1992 . Because of this university station, the community of Iffeldorf calls itself a “ university community ”, but is not allowed to use this title on the town signs due to the lack of a university seat. In 1988, after two years of construction, the community center with town hall, community library, business premises, hotel, country inn and multi-purpose hall was inaugurated. For a relatively small community like Iffeldorf the major project presented at a cost of about nine million DM a major financial challenge. On October 2, 2016, the Municipality Iffeldorf received from the Association for the promotion of fair trade with the Third World the award for fair trade Municipality that was renewed in 2018. Also in October 2016, the town hall moved from the community center to the Deichstetterhaus .

Coats of arms, banners and municipal seals

banner

The municipality of Iffeldorf has a coat of arms, a banner and a seal.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Iffeldorf
Blazon : "Over blue Wellenschildfuß , in a clover-shaped cut-out silver (white) Seeblatt , silver (white) a split of black and red oblique bar , about a blue heraldic lily ."

The coat of arms of the municipality of Iffeldorf has been in use since July 30, 1980, after the municipal council decided it and the government of Upper Bavaria approved it. The base of the wave shield with the sea leaf refers to the Osterseen around Iffeldorf. The heraldic lily, a symbol of Mary , is reminiscent of the Heuwinkl Chapel . The black and red sloping beam comes from the coat of arms of the noble Höhenkirchener von Königsdorf, who owned the Hofmark Iffeldorf from 1385 to 1682. The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Peter Ziller.

The Iffeldorfer municipal banner shows the coat of arms on a red-white-blue background.

seal

The round community seal contains the community coat of arms and the text * Bavaria * Gemeinde Iffeldorf * .

Partner municipality

Medal for the 25th anniversary of the partnership - obverse

An official partnership with the French community of Châteaubourg in Brittany has existed since May 20, 1982 . In August 1966 young people from Iffeldorfer traveled to Châteaubourg for the first time as part of the Franco-German Youth Office , and the following year they made their first return visit.

A memorial stone ( Lage ) is dedicated to the partnership in Iffeldorf, and the Parc Iffeldorf ( Lage ) park in Châteaubourg . Every tenth anniversary of the establishment of friendship is celebrated with a festival in one of the two parishes. The primary school pupils regularly visit the other community for one week, and in 2009 the Iffeldorfer set up a maypole in France.

Community finances

The municipality of Iffeldorf has been through no fault of its own since at least 2004 and can boast increasing tax revenues. Larger investments, such as the construction of the fire station from 2013 to 2015, the expansion of the kindergarten in 2016 and the conversion of the Deichstetterhaus to the town hall from 2014 to 2016 could therefore be financed from the reserves.

Culture and sights

Art, music and theater

The Iffeldorfer Master Concerts form a series of concerts that are also attracting attention beyond Bavaria and are regularly recorded by Bavarian Radio .

The culture award of the community of Iffeldorf is awarded irregularly: In 2010 it was awarded for the first time to the graphic artist Egbert Greven , in 2016 it was awarded to the musician and amateur player Franz Schesser. In the ceramics atelier on St.-Vitus-Platz, Ruth Hartung produces structural ceramics by hand, the works of the wood sculptor Erich Zimmer can also be seen beyond the district boundaries. The amateur play group has performed a mostly Bavarian play almost every year since 1976.

Building history and monuments

Building history and architecture

Iffeldorf was a quiet and modest farming village until the middle of the 19th century. The houses were distributed in Oberdorf (Hofmark) and Unterdorf (today Osterseenstrasse). Big changes began when Joseph von Maffei moved in in 1861. Many small farms were merged with the newly formed large estates. Workers moved in, the village expanded significantly. Houses were built primarily on Staltacher Strasse (then Bahnhofstrasse), and some buildings were also built on today's Alpenstrasse, Waldstrasse and Kocheler Strasse. In Oberdorf and Unterdorf there were still almost only farmers, in the other areas workers from the Staltach estate and the Penzberg mine . While in 1864 there were 46 buildings with 41 apartments, in 1867 there were 67 habitable and 11 other buildings and in 1871 there were already 76 habitable houses and 57 others.

After the Second World War, the first major building projects were realized due to the great housing shortage. A building area was designated on Bodenbach in 1952 and another between Krankenhausstrasse (Alpenstrasse) and the railway line in 1953. In 1954 the second major construction wave began in Untereurach. All builders in these building areas had to cede land for road construction or expansion to the community free of charge. From 1957, the area between Bahnhofstrasse (Staltacher Strasse) and Krankenhausstrasse (Alpenstrasse) was built with very uniform housing developments. In 1959 new houses were built on the south-western edge of the village (Hirtenweg) and construction plans for Auf der Leiten and Auf der Trat were drawn up. After the opening of the Autobahn, construction activity increased again in the 1970s, with many semi-detached houses being built. At the end of the same decade, some farmhouses and barns in Oberdorf were demolished and replaced by single and double houses or converted into condominiums. In 1984, new building plots south of Heuwinklstrasse were sold to locals at a lower price and in 1991, after a long dispute with nature conservation and monument protection, they were built on. After that, more and more houses were built on Sengseestrasse, Auf der Leiten and Faltergatter, which were individually planned multi-family, double and single-family houses. In the youngest building area at the old sawmill, noise protection was necessary due to the railway line and state road 2538 running directly behind it . This was achieved through a specific arrangement of the houses and structural measures on the buildings, which are kept in a modern style ( location ).

Due to the strong growth, the rural-village manifestations have almost disappeared, "the few remaining farmers look like relics". Almost all of the former farms have been converted into apartments. From 2004 to 2017, only a very small amount of new building land was designated and instead, interior densification was preferred. It was only with the decision of the development plan "east of Staltacher Straße" (Rathausweg) in August 2017 that the municipality created the basis for the construction of 21 new residential buildings, including one apartment building and twelve semi-detached houses. Some of the plots were sold according to a local model - in Iffeldorf for the first time since 1992.
